A Discovery of Witches: tv show review 📺

    Hello everybody! 😊 Today, we bring you our oppinion on one of the tv shows we have seen this year, A Discovery of Witches. As some of you might not know, the tv show is based upon the All Souls book trilogy, written by the amazingly talented Deborah Harkness.

The plot

    The story follows Diana Bishop, an academic researcher who came across a very special manuscript that seems to have been missing for centuries, only to be called out by Diana. Besides being a remarkable researcher, Diana is also a witch. Born from a long line of witches dating back before Salem, Diana has not used her powers in years (at least not that she is aware of) and doesn't consider herself to be a very talented or particularly interested witch 🧙🏻‍♀️.

    However, by opening that manuscript, Diana made all the creatures aware to something. Witches 🧙🏻‍♀️, vampires 🧛🏼 and demons 😈, are all interested in this book that might have the secrets to each species' history and in how Diana managed to have it.

    One of the creatures that has been particularly persistent in learning more about the book and Diana, is Matthew Clairmont, a vampire who studies the genetic markers of creatures and has been chasing that manuscript for a long time. With so many reasons to be watching what Diana does, Matthew was not expecting to start falling for her.

    Normally the creatures stay way from other species and keep to themselves, but now that they are drawing attention, the counsil created to keep all species safe, will do whatever it takes to keep the species separated, even if that costs lives 💀.

The show

     Being fans of fantasy shows, we were obviously excited to watch the  3 full seasons. The elegant dark academia aesthetic is visually stunning, paired with a very discrete and complementary soundtrack 🎵🎶. 

     The cast is made of some of the most talented actors and actresses in the industry and it was with surprising ease that they inserted themselves into their characters personality. One of the aspects that might sometimes be overlooked in this type of shows, is the amazing work the wardrobe, hair and makeup departments did with each character's. Sometimes, it is quite easy to fall into tempetation and use the typical aesthetic for what we would believe a witch or a vampire to wear, but the show did a wonderful and probably very exausting job in creating a very individual style for each character while keeping things mostly simple, but without forgetting their academic passions, feelings, age (real or not).

    You can really see that Deborah Harkness was involved and her opinion on the beloved characters she created was heard.

The comparison between the books and the tv show

    Well, now to the part that you are probably hoping to know: does the tv show make an adaptation worthy of the books? And the answer to this is................................. (drum rolls, please 🥁).............................. ready? 3, 2, 1. Yes! 🤗

    A Discovery of Witches has been one of the shows more close to the book that we have ever seen. Of course there are details and even sometimes characters that are left out, but it was done in a way that it didn't interfere with the narrative.

   In some shows, if you read the source material, sometimes you are expecting something organized that allows you to find the beginnig and the ending of each book in the tv show. A Discovery of Witches season 1 and 2 finale end up being very truthful to the source material, making you on the edge for seeing the rest of the plot unfold in front of you 🤩🤗.

   That being said, we really hope you give the tv show a try! We add a lot of fun watching each episode and took less than a month to finish the 3 seasons.     Olá a todos! 😊 Hoje, trazemos-vos a nossa opinião sobre uma das séries que vimos este ano, A Noite de Todas as Almas. Como alguns de vocês podem não saber, a série é baseada na trilogia All Souls, escrita pela incrivelmente talentosa Deborah Harkness.

O enredo

   A história acompanha Diana Bishop, uma investigadora académica que se deparou com um manuscrito muito especial que parece ter estado desaparecido durante séculos, apenas para ser "chamado" pela Diana. Além de ser uma notável investigadora, Diana é também uma bruxa. Nascida de uma longa linhagem de bruxas anteriores a Salem, Diana não usa os seus poderes há anos (pelo menos não que ela saiba) e não se considera uma bruxa muito talentosa ou particularmente interessada 🧙🏻.

    No entanto, ao abrir esse manuscrito, Diana alertou todas as criaturas para algo. Bruxas 🧙🏻, vampiros 🧛🏼 e demónios 😈, estão todos interessados neste livro que pode ter os segredos da história de cada espécie e em como a Diana conseguiu obtê-lo.

     Uma das criaturas que tem sido particularmente persistente em aprender mais sobre o livro e a Diana, é Matthew Clairmont, um vampiro que estuda os marcadores genéticos das criaturas e tem vindo a perseguir esse manuscrito há muito tempo. Com tantas razões para estar atento ao que a Diana faz, o Matthew não estava à espera de começar a apaixonar-se por ela.

     As criaturas normalmente ficam longe das outras espécies e convivem entre eles, mas agora que estão a chamar a atenção, o conselho criado para manter todas as espécies seguras, fará o que for preciso para mantê-las separadas, mesmo que isso custe vidas 💀.

A série

    Sendo fãs de séries de fantasia, estávamos obviamente entusiasmados por ver as 3 temporadas completas. O cenário elegante de dark academia é visualmente deslumbrante, aliado a uma banda sonora muito discreta e complementar 🎵🎶. 

    O elenco é constituído por alguns dos mais talentosos atores e atrizes da indústria e foi com bastante facilidade que eles se inseriram na personalidade das suas personagens. Um dos aspetos que por vezes pode ser esquecido neste tipo de séries, é o espantoso trabalho que o departamento de guarda-roupa, cabelo e maquilhagem fez com cada personagem. Por vezes, é bastante fácil cair na tentação e usar o aspeto típico para aquilo que acreditaríamos que uma bruxa ou um vampiro usaria, mas a série fez um trabalho maravilhoso e provavelmente muito exaustivo na criação de um estilo muito individual para cada personagem, mantendo as coisas na sua maioria simples, mas sem esquecer as suas paixões académicas, sentimentos, idade (real ou não).

    Vê-se realmente que Deborah Harkness estava envolvida e a sua opinião sobre as personagens que criou e que adoramos, foram ouvidas.

A comparação entre os livros e a série

    Bem, agora a parte que provavelmente esperam saber: será que a série fez uma adaptação digna dos livros? E a resposta a isto é................................. (rufos de tambor, por favor 🥁).............................. preparados? 3, 2, 1. Sim! 🤗

    A Noite de Todas as Almas foi uma das séries mais próximas do livro que alguma vez vimos. Claro que há detalhes e até por vezes personagens que são deixados de fora, mas foi feito de uma forma que não interferiu com a narrativa.

    Em algumas séries, se leremos o material de origem, por vezes esperamos algo organizado que nos permita encontrar o início e o fim de cada livro na série. Os finais das temporadas 1 e 2 de A Noite de Todas as Almas acabam por ser muito semelhantes ao texto original, deixando-nos espectáveis para ver o resto do enredo desenrolar-se à nossa frente 🤩🤗.

    Dito isto, esperamos realmente que deem uma oportunidade à série! Nós divertimo-nos muito a ver cada episódio e demorámos menos de um mês a terminar as 3 temporadas.
