🔎 Book Review: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson 🔍
Hello, fellow readers! Ready for another review? 😊
Today we’re here to talk about another book we read at the end of last year, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. This story was absolutely addictive and stayed with us for weeks after we finished it. We also found out that there’s a Netflix adaptation starring Emma Myers as Pip, which we still haven’t watched — but we’re incredibly curious! 🔍
Synopsis
Five years after the murder of Andie Bell, the small town where Pip Fitz-Amobi lives believes the case is closed. Sal Singh, Andie’s boyfriend, was found guilty before taking his own life, bringing the investigation to a swift end. For most people, the truth is simple… but for Pip, something has never quite added up.
Determined to uncover what really happened, Pip chooses the case as the subject of her school project and begins her own investigation. As she starts interviewing people connected to Andie and Sal, Pip quickly realizes that the town’s past is far from as transparent as it seems. Long-buried secrets begin to surface, and every answer only leads to more questions.
As Pip gets closer to truths that someone clearly wants to keep hidden, the investigation stops being purely academic and starts to have very real consequences. Her life — and the lives of those she loves — may be at risk.
This was one of those books we read with our brains on high alert, our hearts racing, and a constant “just one more chapter” mindset 👀.
We’re huge fans of mysteries and investigations, and following Pip as she reopens a seemingly closed case was an absolutely gripping experience. Connecting clues, revisiting contradictory accounts, and trying to anticipate what really happened to Andie Bell made this a deeply immersive read, because the reader isn’t just a spectator, but an active accomplice in the investigation!
⚠️ From this point on, there will be major spoilers! If you haven’t read the book yet and want to avoid them, come back later. ⚠️
At first, we honestly thought the story might be lighter and almost a “safe” young adult mystery. But we quickly realized we were wrong. The tension builds in a subtle and intelligent way until it becomes genuinely unsettling.
The camping scene, in particular, really stayed with us: the feeling of being watched, the invisible yet ever-present threat… and of course, the note found in the sleeping bag. Real fear! The kind that makes you pause for a second just to breathe and glance over your shoulder.
Later on, the disappearance — and eventual death — of our beloved dog and Pip’s companion, Barney, was an absolute shock. We were completely unprepared for it, and it was the moment we realized this book wasn’t afraid to go much darker emotionally.
Pip is… bizarre. But in the best possible way! 👐🏼 Her mind works like a bottomless well of information, logic, and obsessive focus. It’s hard not to see her as an incredibly interesting representation of someone with ADHD, constantly hyperfocused and connecting dots no one else notices.
We empathized with her from the very beginning, as well as with Ravi, and the almost desperate way they both cling to Sal’s memory and the need to clear his name. Pip’s motivation is deeply human and admirable. For her this isn’t just academic curiosity, it’s about justice. Her courage is equally impressive, especially when she repeatedly puts herself in real danger, fully aware of the risks, but unable to turn her back on the truth.
The book’s format is simply brilliant and keeps the reader even more engaged. Interviews, transcripts, messages, and documents make the reading experience dynamic, accessible, and incredibly easy to follow. Everything flows naturally and logically without ever becoming confusing.
And that suspect list at the end? Chef’s kiss. A simple, but perfect tool that helps keep everything organized and reinforces the feeling that we’re conducting a real investigation. It’s innovative, different, and refreshing, something that isn’t always easy to find in this genre.
The mystery kept us hooked until the very end! There were moments when we genuinely feared Pip might be wrong and that Sal could actually be responsible for Andie’s death. Still, we did manage to anticipate one of the major revelations: the involvement of the teacher and father of Pip’s best friend, Elliot Ward, in Sal’s death. From early on, something about him felt off, and seeing that suspicion confirmed was incredibly satisfying.
Every character serves a clear purpose in the story, but Pip’s family was a standout for us. Their support, warmth, and the way they welcome the Singh family create a beautiful contrast to the darkness of the mystery. It’s a functional, loving, present family, something rare and very welcome in stories like this.
Ravi is equally wonderful. His connection with Pip develops naturally, with clear chemistry, though it feels more like a crush than a full-blown romance. We’re definitely curious to see how that relationship evolves in the following books.
As for Sal’s group of friends… honestly? Insufferable!!! Max was a criminal idiot from the start, but Naomi was especially frustrating. After everything Pip did to protect her, learning that she threw Sal “under the bus” so easily was infuriating.
Pip’s role among all the characters is to uncover the truth in the hope that justice will be served even when those responsible are, in her eyes, also victims. We see this clearly in the way Pip tries to understand even those who hurt her, recognizing the moral complexity of guilt and victimhood. Her attitude toward Becca is a perfect example of this nuance.
More than solving a crime, the story exposes the dark secrets of a small town and dismantles the idea that things are ever as simple as they seem on the surface.
The pacing is fast, but methodical. Each discovery comes at just the right moment, balancing tension with narrative progression and new revelations. The writing is extremely accessible, working perfectly for both YA readers and adults.
The ending is satisfying, though bittersweet, because many people inevitably suffer as a result of Pip’s discoveries. It also leaves doors open… Clearly, there are more stories to tell, and we’re very interested in discovering what the rest of the trilogy has in store for us 📖🔍.
In the end, we give A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder 5 stars ⭐ (a perfect score!). It’s an intelligent, tense, emotionally impactful, and exceptionally well-crafted mystery. It could have worked as a standalone, but we’re genuinely curious to continue the trilogy and see what comes next. Can the following books live up to the first?
