We knew The Housemaid was a phenomenon among thriller readers, but the truth is we had absolutely no idea what we were getting into. It was only after reading the back cover that we truly began to understand the kind of story we were about to experience, and in that moment, all the hype surrounding Freida McFadden finally made sense. We knew we had a promising thriller in our hands, but we never imagined just how addictive and intense it would be 😶.
Synopsis
Millie is desperate for a fresh start and an opportunity. With very few options and a past she would rather keep hidden, she accepts a job as a housemaid for the seemingly perfect Winchester family. The house is luxurious, the pay is good… and Millie has to sleep in a small room in the attic, with a door that only locks from the outside.
As the days go by, Millie begins to realize that nothing in this house is normal. Nina, her employer, is unpredictable, unstable, and prone to disturbing mood swings, while Andrew, her husband, appears calm, charming, and composed. Still, the tension grows with every interaction, and the atmosphere becomes increasingly suffocating.
Between uncomfortable silences, unsettling behavior, and a constant feeling that something is deeply wrong, Millie finds herself trapped in a situation that may not be so easy to escape.
From the very first pages, the pacing is absolutely relentless. This is one of those books that doesn’t let you breathe between chapters. Every chapter ends with new questions, new unease, and an almost desperate need to keep reading. It was a completely out-of-control reading experience: five days later, the book was finished. Freida McFadden’s writing is direct, accessible, and dangerously addictive. It’s impossible to put the book down without thinking “just one more chapter”… over and over again 🤭.

The atmosphere is one of the strongest aspects of this story. There is a constant tension, a subtle discomfort that never fully disappears. We never know which version of Nina we’re going to encounter, and just like Millie, we start to feel like we’re losing our grip on reality due to her unpredictable outbursts. The house itself feels cold, sterile, almost devoid of personality, with one very clear exception: the attic. From the very first moment, that space creates an immediate sense of unease. Knowing the door only locks from the outside is unsettling enough, but when we discover, along with Millie, the marks on the wood from someone trying to get out… our blood ran cold. Something has been deeply wrong from the start 👀.
Millie works brilliantly as a protagonist because her experience mirrors the reader’s perfectly. We’re just as lost and confused as she is, just as tense, constantly bracing ourselves for the next disaster. Nina is the great mystery of the book, with her volatile, unstable, and seemingly dangerous personality. However, it’s Andrew who turns out to be truly disturbing. When the truth comes out and we realize he is the real villain, the feeling is pure disgust. And his mother… absolutely chilling 😰. Her speech at the funeral is one of the most disturbing moments in the book and proves that this madness runs deep. As the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
From the theater scene onward, we sensed that something wasn’t right, though we still hadn’t grasped the full extent of Andrew’s psychopathy or his complete break from reality. What truly caught us off guard was the revelation about his mother. That family is, without exaggeration, terrifying 😶.
The book itself is outstanding, but the film adaptation adds an extra layer of brutality and amplifies the villain’s madness. In the movie, Millie’s torture is far more graphic, making Andrew even more horrifying in our eyes. On another note, Amanda Seyfried’s performance is simply magnetic. She steals every scene, balancing madness, vulnerability, and courage in a way that is utterly hypnotizing 👏.
By the end of the book, we were completely obsessed. Literally. We talked about it with everyone we crossed paths with, unable to contain our excitement. The idea that the story continues and that Millie may become a kind of avenger for women who are victims of abuse, only made us even more curious and invested in what comes next. This book earns a full 5 stars from us! ⭐
We recommend The Housemaid to almost everyone… with one important warning. This is an intense book that deals with heavy themes related to abuse and domestic violence ⚠️. It is not a light read, and we believe it’s best suited for an adult audience or, at the very least, readers aged 16 and up. If you enjoy dark stories filled with psychological tension, well-crafted twists, and morally complex characters, this book is a must-read. Still, we want to emphasize that it addresses sensitive topics, so please read with awareness and care.
Sabíamos que A Criada era um fenómeno entre os leitores de thrillers, mas a verdade é que não fazíamos a mínima ideia do que nos esperava. Só ao ler a contracapa começámos realmente a perceber o tipo de história em que estávamos a entrar e, nesse momento, a “hype” à volta da Freida McFadden começou finalmente a fazer sentido. Tínhamos em mãos um thriller promissor, sim, mas nunca imaginámos o quão viciante e intenso iria ser 😶.

Millie está desesperada por um novo começo e por uma oportunidade. Sem grandes opções e com um passado que prefere manter escondido, aceita trabalhar como empregada para a aparentemente perfeita família Winchester. A casa é luxuosa, o salário é bom… e a Millie tem de dormir num pequeno quarto no sótão, cuja porta só tranca por fora.
À medida que os dias passam, a Millie começa a perceber que nada naquela casa é normal. Nina, a patroa, é imprevisível, instável e capaz de mudanças de humor perturbadoras, enquanto Andrew, o marido, é o exemplo de charme e tranquilidade. No entanto, a tensão cresce a cada interação e o ambiente torna-se cada vez mais sufocante.

Desde as primeiras páginas, o ritmo é absolutamente imparável. Este é daqueles livros que não nos deixa respirar entre capítulos. Cada fim de capítulo traz novas perguntas, novas inquietações e uma necessidade quase desesperada de continuar a ler. Foi uma leitura completamente fora de controlo: em cinco dias, o livro estava terminado. A escrita da Freida McFadden é direta, acessível e perigosamente viciante. É impossível pousar o livro sem pensar “só mais um capítulo”… repetidamente 🤭.

A atmosfera é um dos grandes destaques desta história. Existe uma tensão constante, um desconforto subtil que nunca desaparece. Nunca sabemos que versão da Nina vamos encontrar e, tal como a Millie, começamos a sentir que estamos a enlouquecer perante as explosões imprevisíveis da patroa. A casa em si é fria, estéril, quase sem personalidade, com uma exceção muito clara: o sótão. Desde o primeiro momento, aquele espaço provoca um mal-estar imediato. Saber que a porta só tranca por fora é suficiente para nos deixar inquietos, mas quando percebemos, juntamente com a Millie, que há marcas na madeira de alguém que tentou sair… o sangue gela. Algo está profundamente errado ali desde o início 👀.
A Millie funciona de forma brilhante como protagonista, porque a sua experiência reflete exatamente a do leitor. Estamos tão perdidos e confusos quanto ela, tão tensos, sempre à espera do próximo desastre. A Nina é o grande mistério do livro, com uma personalidade instável, volátil e à primeira vista, perigosa. No entanto, é o Andrew que se revela verdadeiramente perturbador. Quando a verdade vem à tona e percebemos que ele é o verdadeiro vilão, a sensação é de puro nojo. E a mãe dele… que peça arrepiante 😰. O discurso no funeral é um dos momentos mais perturbadores do livro e prova que aquela loucura vem de longe. Como se costuma dizer, quem sai aos seus, não degenera.
Desde a cena da ida ao espetáculo, que sentíamos que algo não batia certo, mas ainda não imaginávamos o nível de psicopatia e a total quebra com a realidade do Andrew. O que nos apanhou completamente desprevenidos foi a revelação sobre a mãe dele. Aquela família é, sem exageros, aterradora 😶.
O livro é extraordinário, mas a adaptação cinematográfica trouxe ainda mais brutalidade à história e a loucura do vilão. No filme, a tortura da Millie é mais "pesada", o que torna o Andrew ainda mais horrível aos nossos olhos. Noutra nota, a atuação da Amanda Seyfried é simplesmente magnética. Ela rouba todas as cenas, equilibrando loucura, vulnerabilidade e coragem de forma absolutamente hipnotizante 👏.
No final da leitura, ficámos obcecados. Literalmente. Falámos deste livro com toda a gente que cruzou o nosso caminho, incapazes de conter o entusiasmo. A ideia de que a história continua e que a Millie se irá tornar uma espécie de vingadora de mulheres vítimas de abuso, só nos deixou ainda mais curiosos e investidos na continuação. O livro recebe 5 estrelinhas da nossa parte! ⭐
Recomendamos A Criada praticamente a toda a gente… com uma ressalva importante. Este é um livro intenso, com temas pesados relacionados com abuso e violência doméstica ⚠️. Não é uma leitura leve, e por isso acreditamos que seja mais adequada a um público adulto ou, no mínimo, a leitores a partir dos 16 anos. Se gostam de histórias sombrias, cheias de tensão psicológica, reviravoltas bem construídas e personagens moralmente complexas, este livro é obrigatório. Ainda assim, deixamos o aviso: aborda temas sensíveis ligados a abuso e violência doméstica, pelo que é importante ler com consciência e cuidado.
