🌷 Book Review: Regretting You by Colleen Hoover 🌷

(English)

Hi everyone! ✨ Happy New Year! ✨We finally have another review ready to share with you! The perfect timing has unfortunately passed, because, in reality, we had hoped to share this review back when the book’s adaptation was released in cinemas, so we could talk about both at the same time!πŸ˜”

But since life isn’t perfect and schedules don’t always help, this review slowly dropped down our list of priorities, until it was completely forgotten. Still, we’re finally ready to share our thoughts on the book!😌

Synopsis

Regretting You follows Morgan and Clara, a mother and daughter whose lives are shaken by an unexpected tragedy. Everything is turned upside down after Chris, Morgan’s husband and Clara’s father, dies in a car accident, forcing both women to confront painful truths, old wounds, and choices they never thought they would have to make. Through secrets, personal growth, and new beginnings, the story shows how love, even when imperfect, can be what saves us from living the rest of our lives consumed by bitterness and pain.

⚠️ From this point on, we’ll be discussing the story in more depth, so spoilers ahead! ⚠️

Once again, Colleen Hoover takes a relatively simple family drama and turns it into an emotional narrative. This time about two women who love each other deeply, but are unable to communicate when they need it most. Both are grieving the same loss, yet from completely different perspectives and with very different understandings of what happened, which makes their reactions clash in painful ways.

For Morgan, this means not only dealing with the loss of Chris and her sister Jenny, but also facing the revelation of her husband’s infidelity. For Clara, it’s about accepting the death of her father and aunt, while also struggling with the idea that the accident might have been her fault. At the same time, we witness the development of her feelings for Miles, a classmate from school. What’s most heartbreaking is realizing that both are suffering deeply, yet instead of growing closer and supporting one another, they create a distance that, at times, feels permanent and irreparable.

Morgan feels her entire life collapsing. In the same accident, she loses her sister and her husband, discovers they had been having an affair for years, and learns that her sister’s baby is actually Chris’s, not Jenny’s fiancΓ© Jonah’s. The stability she thought she had vanishes, and her entire life feels like one enormous lie that forces her to question every memory she has. On top of the pain, she carries the burden of protecting her daughter from the truth, allowing Clara to preserve a loving image of her father and aunt, even if that makes Morgan appear like the villain.

Clara, on the other hand, lost the father she adored and idolized, and the aunt who was her confidante. She feels her mother is hiding everything from her and trying to erase their presence from her life. She feels betrayed, lost, and deeply misunderstood. Her anger, though impulsive, feels real, human, and completely aligned with her age and emotional turmoil. Like Morgan, Clara carries a secret throughout the story: on the day of the accident, she was texting her aunt, and everything suggests that Jenny was replying when the accident happened.

The alternating perspectives work perfectly because as readers, we understand both women, even when they fail to understand each other. Still, that doesn’t stop us from feeling extremely frustrated by their misunderstandings.

At the heart of the story lies the secret connecting Morgan, Chris, Jenny, and Jonah, a secret that weighs heavily over every page, even before it’s revealed. There’s an underlying discomfort from the very beginning, a constant sense that something isn’t right. Rather than focusing solely on the shock of discovering the affair, the author emphasizes the consequences of their actions on those left behind: the destruction of a marriage full of memories, the guilt of loving someone you feel you shouldn’t, and the constant attempt to protect those we love, even when that protection causes more harm than good.

Although family drama is at the core of the narrative, the romances help soften the reading experience,  and of course, we have to talk about them!

Morgan and Jonah share a relationship built slowly, with respect and years of shared history, as well as a love that was always pushed aside out of respect for their partners. A true slow burn!πŸ”₯ Admitting their feelings was always difficult, even as teenagers, when the tension between them was undeniable, and it only becomes more complicated now, as adults, with children involved.

There’s a strong fear, especially on Morgan’s part, that if she gives in and admits she loves Jonah, she’ll be no better than Chris and Jenny, that she’ll be placing her own happiness above Clara’s well-being and Jenny’s baby, Elijah. Morgan is a self-sacrificing character who has always put her own desires aside for what Chris wanted, for what Clara needed. Jonah isn’t very different, having distanced himself in his youth so Morgan could be happy, believing Chris could give her the life she deserved.

Jonah’s calm nature finally cracks when he discovers that the baby he’s been raising as his own is actually the result of Jenny’s affair with Chris, and that she knew all along and married him only to avoid suspicion. At first, his reaction is driven by anger and resentment, but when the moment comes, he realizes that Elijah is his son in the way that truly matters, and that the child needs him more than anyone else.

Their love story is mature and beautiful, proving that what they feel for each other cannot be diminished by time or distance.

Clara and Miller represent the opposite: a messy teenage love full of stumbles, tension, insecurity, sweet moments… and a few arguments that made us cringe at the memory of ever being teenagers ourselves. πŸ˜‚
They share a love for cinema, and when Clara’s parents find out they know each other, Chris immediately reveals he knew Miller’s father and insists that since he wasn’t a decent man, his son must be the same — peak hypocrisy. Thankfully, we have the wonderful Jonah 😌 as the couple’s biggest supporter, immediately defending Miles as a kind, hardworking, and respectful boy who is nothing like his father.

When Chris remains inflexible and forbids Clara from seeing him, once again, the magnificent Jonah (you can tell we love him, right?🀭) adds his magic touch and brings them both together in a film-related project.
Their relationship isn’t easy, facing not only poor decisions (mostly on Clara’s side — but we’ll give her a pass), but also Morgan’s stubbornness, fueled by Chris’s comments and unfortunate misunderstandings.

Still, despite everything, our favorite couple is definitely Morgan and Jonah! πŸ†

The ending is deeply emotional, with Clara finally learning the truth: her father’s affair with her aunt, that the baby she believed to be her cousin is actually her half-brother, and that above all, her mother endured judgment and blame to protect her from the full horror of the situation. The story ends with reconciliation and a sense of hope for what the future holds.

Regretting You is a book that tackles heavy themes such as grief, secrets revealed after death, guilt, and above all, the attempt to protect the ones we love from painful truths. In our opinion, this is ultimately a story about a mother and daughter, about love and loss, mistakes and forgiveness. It has frustrating moments and, at times, reads a bit like fanfiction, even becoming ridiculous in certain partsπŸ˜…, but it’s an easy, compelling read that keeps you wanting to know what happens next. For us, this book deserves 3.5 stars ⭐.

If you haven’t watched the adaptation yet, give it a try! It’s a quick watch and, while less detailed and a bit faster-paced than we’d like, it remains a fairly faithful adaptation of the book.

That’s all for today! We hope you enjoyed this review, and we’ll see you in the next posts! We wish everyone a happy new year, full of good books, memorable stories, and happy moments. πŸ€πŸ“š✨

OlΓ‘ pessoal! ✨ Feliz Ano Novo!
