π§️π―️ A Cozy Murder Mystery for Rainy Days π✨
(English)
There are films we start watching with immediate excitement… and then there are others that win us over precisely because we go in with low expectations and end up being surprised by the twist they deliver. Invitation to a Murder clearly belongs to the second category!
From the very first minutes, it is impossible not to think of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. A group of strangers, seemingly with nothing in common, is invited by an enigmatic millionaire to spend a few days in an isolated mansion on an island. The premise is classic, almost too familiar, and we went into this viewing with fairly restrained expectations, afraid that we were about to watch a simple modern copy of a mystery that has already been told countless times.
But the truth is, the film managed to surprise us.
We ended the film pleasantly impressed. Invitation to a Murder does not reinvent the genre, but it knows how to play with it and, above all, delivers an effective, well-constructed and genuinely unexpected plot twist. For much of the film, the narrative seems to follow a relatively predictable, almost comfortable path, but when the moment of revelation arrives… everything changes.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is undoubtedly its performances. Chris Browning, as Donald Walker, and Seamus Dever, as Lawrence Kane, completely steal the show. The American journalist quickly became our favourite: there is something about his presence, the development of his character and the way he moves through the story that captures attention and sparks curiosity. These are solid, charismatic performances and far better than we expected for this type of film.
Mischa Barton takes on the role of Miranda Green, our protagonist. Her character is interesting and works well as the emotional centre of the story, although at times she feels somewhat emotionally detached from more serious situations, which creates a bit of distance in certain key moments.
The dynamics between the characters also work better than expected. There is chemistry, particularly between Walker and Miranda, marked by mutual admiration and a constant curiosity about who the other truly is. There is no romantic relationship between them, but there is enough subtlety and tension to make their interactions engaging.
When it comes to suspense, the film takes a while to gain momentum. For a large part of the narrative, we felt we already knew what was going to happen: someone would die, and from there we would follow the classic formula of characters falling one by one, with Miranda as the likely final survivor. When the first death occurs, that expectation seems to be confirmed… until it isn’t.
That is precisely where Invitation to a Murder finds new life. The plot twist is, without a doubt, the film’s highlight. We found ourselves leaning towards the screen, completely absorbed, trying to catch every detail as the mystery unravelled before our eyes. The final revelation is shocking, well executed and, above all, unexpected enough to justify the entire journey up to that point.
Visually, the film is a real pleasure. You can feel the care and respect for the classic mystery genre. The mansion is rich in detail, full of personality and atmosphere, almost functioning as a character in its own right. The wardrobe also deserves praise, contributing to the elegance and timeless tone of the story. Everything works together to create a sense of cozy mystery, perfect for a comforting viewing experience.
The soundtrack supports the scenes well, blending into the narrative in a subtle way. It is not particularly memorable, but it does its job by reinforcing the atmosphere without ever overpowering the story.
In the end, Invitation to a Murder proved to be the ideal film for a rainy day, with a warm cup of tea and a crackling fireplace. It is not a frenetic or deeply disturbing thriller, but it is a solid mystery, visually beautiful and smart enough to hold your interest until the end.
We recommend it to anyone who enjoys crime and mystery stories, but is looking for something lighter, more accessible and comfortable to watch.
⭐ Final rating: 3.5 stars
A film that starts off predictably, but ultimately proves that there is still room for surprises in such a classic genre.
