    Some films we stumble upon by pure chance… and that end up becoming little gems. Keeping Mum was exactly one of those. We had never heard of this film until we came across its poster on Pinterest. As soon as we realized it brought together Maggie Smith and Rowan Atkinson in a British comedy, it was impossible to resist. British humor, iconic actors, and a strangely promising premise?     We were expecting something bizarre, perhaps eccentric, and we were not disappointed in the slightest. Keeping Mum delivers a delightfully dark comedy, filled with the dry, sharp, no-holds-barred humor that the British do so well. From the very first minutes, it becomes clear that this is not a “normal” film.

    The tone is unapologetically absurd and playful. The idea that an apparently innocent elderly woman is, in fact, a ruthless serial killer who eliminates anyone she considers an inconvenience to herself or those she loves is as wrong… as it is hilarious. It’s impossible not to draw comparisons to classics like Arsenic & Old Lace, where crime and humor coexist in a disturbingly irresistible way.

    We’ll admit we watched this film late at night, with the whole house asleep, and it was incredibly hard to suppress our laughter 🤭. Every new murder committed by Grace made us feel like we were losing karma points for laughing so much, with one very clear exception: when she takes care of a pervert who is secretly filming the family’s daughter. The swift, practical, and completely impassive way she handles the situation is as wrong as it is satisfying 😌.

    And this is where the film’s greatest strength lies: Grace, portrayed brilliantly by our eternal Maggie Smith. Despite being a serial killer, it’s impossible not to find her strangely comforting. She fiercely protects the family, looks after the children, and even helps Reverend Goodfellow save his marriage, which seemed doomed to fail. It feels bizarre to say this about a serial killer, but… who wouldn’t want a Grace around?

    Rowan Atkinson and Kristin Scott Thomas also shine in their roles, portraying a couple whose marriage has long since lost its spark. Their dynamic is uncomfortable, funny, and surprisingly real. All the characters are eccentric, but never empty caricatures (anyone who grew up in small towns or villages knows that if there weren’t any odd characters, that’s when things would truly be strange).

    The film maintains an excellent pace from start to finish. We never felt bored and were constantly curious to see how far the story would go. There are absolutely priceless moments, like the scene where Grace is about to kill someone, gets interrupted… and the victim ends up dying of fright. Dark comedy at its finest 😂.

    This isn’t a film focused on shocking twists or complex mysteries. We’re here to laugh at the absurdity, not to solve a puzzle. Still, there are unexpected moments — including a few nude scenes that completely caught us off guard 😅. ⚠ Important warning: this is not a film to watch with children. ⚠

    Visually and emotionally, Keeping Mum is a cozy, entertaining film. Despite the murders (yes, that still sounds strange), it’s oddly comforting. It’s the perfect choice for a rainy afternoon, a warm cup of tea, a blanket on the sofa… and guaranteed laughter. Just avoid hot chocolate — there’s a real risk you’ll spill it while laughing 😅.

    In the end, we give Keeping Mum 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐. It’s a delightful, cozy, absurd comedy that knows exactly what it is. It delivers everything it promises within the realm of British humor and has definitely earned a place on our list of comfort films to rewatch on days when we just want to relax and laugh without overthinking.

    Há filmes que encontramos por acaso… e que acabam por se tornar pequenas pérolas. Uma Família dos Diabos foi exatamente um desses. Nunca tínhamos ouvido falar deste filme até encontrar o poster do mesmo no Pinterest. Quando percebemos que juntava a Maggie Smith e o Rowan Atkinson numa comédia britânica, foi impossível resistir.     Íamos à espera de algo bizarro, talvez excêntrico, e não ficámos minimamente desiludidos. Uma Família dos Diabos entrega uma comédia deliciosamente negra, com aquele humor seco, mordaz e sem limites que os britânicos fazem como ninguém. Desde os primeiros minutos, percebemos que este não é um filme “normal”.

    O tom é assumidamente absurdo e divertido. A ideia de uma velhinha, aparentemente inocente, ser na verdade uma serial killer sem escrúpulos, que elimina qualquer pessoa que represente um inconveniente para si ou para aqueles que ama, é tão errada… quanto hilariante. É impossível não fazer a ligação a clássicos como Arsenic & Old Lace, onde o crime e o humor convivem de forma perturbadora e irresistível.

    Podemos confessar que vimos este filme já tarde, com a casa inteira a dormir, e foi incrivelmente difícil conter as gargalhadas 🤭. Cada novo homicídio cometido pela Grace fazia-nos sentir que estávamos a perder pontos no karma por nos rirmos tanto, com uma exceção muito clara: quando ela elimina um pervertido que anda a filmar a filha da família. A forma rápida, prática e absolutamente impassível com que ela resolve a situação… é tão errada quanto satisfatória 😌.

    E é aqui que entra o maior trunfo do filme: Grace, interpretada de forma fabulosa pela nossa eterna Maggie Smith. Apesar de ser uma assassina, é impossível não a achar estranhamente reconfortante. Ela protege a família com unhas e dentes, cuida das crianças, e chega mesmo a ajudar o vigário Goodfellow a salvar o seu casamento, que parecia condenado ao fracasso. É bizarro dizer isto sobre uma serial killer, mas… quem não gostaria de ter uma Grace por perto?

    Rowan Atkinson e Kristin Scott Thomas também brilham nos seus papéis, interpretando um casal cujo casamento perdeu há muito a chama. A dinâmica entre eles é desconfortável, engraçada e surpreendentemente real. Todas as personagens são excêntricas, mas nunca caricaturas vazias (quem cresceu em aldeias ou meios mais pequenos sabe que, se não houvesse bizarria entre os habitantes, isso é que seria verdadeiramente estranho).

    O filme mantém um ritmo excelente do início ao fim. Nunca nos sentimos aborrecidos e estávamos sempre curiosos para saber até onde a história iria. Há momentos absolutamente impagáveis, como a cena em que a Grace está prestes a matar alguém, é interrompida, e a vítima acaba por morrer de susto. Comédia negra no seu melhor 😂.

    Não é um filme especialmente focado em surpreender com grandes reviravoltas. Estamos ali para nos rir do absurdo da situação, não para desvendar um mistério complexo. Ainda assim, há momentos inesperados, incluindo algumas cenas de nudismo que nos apanharam completamente desprevenidos 😅. ⚠ Aviso importante: não é um filme para ver com crianças. ⚠

    Visualmente e emocionalmente, Uma Família dos Diabos é um filme cozy e divertido. Apesar dos homicídios (sim, isto continua a soar estranho), é estranhamente reconfortante. É o tipo de filme perfeito para uma tarde chuvosa, chá quente, manta no sofá… e gargalhadas garantidas. Evitem apenas o chocolate quente, porque existe o risco real de o entornarem a rir 😅.
