πŸ–️ Book review: People We Meet on Vacation πŸ–️

 (English)

Hi everyone!😊 Today we’re bringing you our review of the first book we finished this year: People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry.

This book had been on our priority list for quite some time and, after finally reading it (and also watching the adaptation), we can confidently say it was such a fun and incredibly addictive experience.

Summary

People We Meet on Vacation follows the story of Poppy and Alex, two people who, at first sight, couldn’t be more different.

After sharing a ride home from college, they end up forming an unlikely friendship and make a pact that will shape their lives for years: every year, they’ll meet up and go on a trip together.

For almost a decade, they stick to this tradition religiously, collecting stories, adventures, and unforgettable memories. But something went wrong on their last trip… and it’s been two years since they last spoke.

In the present, Poppy lives in New York City and works as a travel writer — her dream job. The problem? Traveling no longer brings her the same joy. The inspiration has faded, and the passion for her work seems completely lost.

During a particularly frustrating moment, a friend suggests that maybe she just needs to go back to what truly made her happy. That’s when Poppy makes an impulsive decision: she texts Alex. The conversation starts casually, but for her, it’s a mix of nerves and excitement.

During that exchange, Alex mentions that his younger brother David’s wedding is coming up. That’s when Poppy gets an idea: she organizes a work trip to Palm Springs — where the wedding will take place — which ends up with her becoming Alex’s plus-one.

But this trip won’t be easy. They’ll both have to confront what happened in the past and admit that maybe what they feel for each other has grown into something more than just friendship.

Our thoughts

⚠️ As always, from here on there will be spoilers! ⚠️

This book fits perfectly into the friends-to-lovers trope — one of our favorites. While this type of story is often overshadowed by enemies-to-lovers, this book proves that a romance can be just as intense, just in a more gradual, slow-burn way.

From the very beginning, it’s clear that there’s something special between Poppy and Alex, but their relationship is carefully built over the years through the trips they take and the moments they share.

A big part of the magic lies in the anticipation — we’re constantly waiting for one of them to admit their feelings, while also trying to figure out what exactly happened on the trip that drove them apart.

The narrative alternates between the present and their different vacations over the years, with each trip representing a different stage of their relationship. Some are chaotic, others funny or even awkward, but all of them deepen the connection between the two.

One of the book’s strongest points is definitely the dynamic between Poppy and Alex. They’re opposites in almost every way: Poppy is spontaneous, impulsive, and adventurous; Alex is reserved, organized, and more comfortable sticking to routine.

Even so, their connection is undeniable. Their conversations flow naturally, the humor comes easily, and the chemistry is obvious.

Another aspect we really appreciated was the character development. Poppy has a complicated relationship with her hometown, shaped by experiences with bullying and a constant feeling of not belonging. She’s always felt some embarrassment about her chaotic family environment, which fueled her desire to leave and build a different life.

Travel became her escape — but in the present, we see that it no longer holds the same meaning, especially without Alex by her side.

Alex, on the other hand, has a past marked by the loss of his mother, which led him to take on family responsibilities at a young age. He became almost a parental figure to his siblings, while his father coped with grief. His grandmother, Betty, plays a key role as a steady source of support within the family — and she’s also someone who always recognized the importance of Alex and Poppy’s relationship.

Because of that, the distance between them feels even more painful — especially when Poppy realizes that she didn’t just miss out on happy moments, but also wasn’t there when Betty passed away.

Even though Alex is more of a homebody, he constantly steps out of his comfort zone to be with Poppy — which only proves how special these trips truly are. In the end, they were never really about the destinations, but about sharing them with each other.

It’s a comforting, honest, and emotional romance that realistically explores the fear of losing a friendship — and how that fear can keep someone from admitting what they truly feel.

The movie

We also had the chance to watch the book’s adaptation and, overall, it was a really fun experience.

The movie keeps the light and romantic tone typical of rom-coms, although it simplifies some elements of the story to fit the format.

Some trips are condensed, certain moments are changed (like the wedding, which takes place in Barcelona instead of Palm Springs), but the essence remains: the friendship, the humor, and the romantic tension are all still there.

Even with these differences, it was really interesting to see these characters come to life on screen.

The premise might seem simple — and may even remind some people of Love, Rosie — but honestly, that doesn’t take away from the experience at all.

We absolutely loved reading this book and found it hard to put down. The back-and-forth between past and present works really well and helps us understand how the relationship evolves.

At its core, People We Meet on Vacation is a story about friendship, timing, and feelings that quietly grow over the years.

If you enjoy friends-to-lovers, travel stories, and romances with a touch of nostalgia, there’s a very good chance this book is for you.

Our final rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars ⭐.

(PortuguΓͺs)

O problema?

A nossa opiniΓ£o

A nossa classificação final: 4,5 / 5 estrelinhas ⭐.
