Today we’re bringing you our review of Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover.

We knew this book was beloved by readers and that it told a very impactful story, but even so, nothing could have prepared us for the intense and complex themes it explores.

This isn’t a romantic story where the characters simply face a few obstacles on their way to a happily ever after. It’s a deeply emotional narrative that explores themes like loss, guilt, redemption, and forgiveness.

Synopsis

The story follows Kenna Rowan, a young woman who has just been released from prison after serving time for a mistake that completely changed her life. Determined to rebuild her future, Kenna has only one goal: to become part of her daughter Diem’s life, a child she has never had the chance to know.

However, that path is far from easy. The people around her, especially those who were also affected by what happened, are not willing to forgive or forget. For many, Kenna will always be defined by the worst moment of her life, and Diem must be kept away from her at all costs.

Ledger Ward was also affected by Kenna’s mistake. However, against all expectations, Ledger not only begins to feel that everyone may have been unfair to Kenna, but also starts to form a connection with her.

Our thoughts

One of the things that impacted us the most in this book is the absence of clear villains. There are no “bad guys” here. Every character is dealing with the same tragedy, but in different ways, and that makes it impossible to point fingers so easily.

We’re faced with a group of people deeply marked by pain, loss, and the consequences of past decisions. Each one is trying to move forward in the best way they can, and sometimes that leads to actions that end up hurting others. These are reactions born from pain and from the need to protect the little peace they have left.

Kenna is, without a doubt, a complex and difficult character to analyze because of everything she carries emotionally. We know she made a serious mistake, but throughout the story, we also come to understand her regret, her vulnerability, and how far she’s willing to go to try to make things right and move forward. It becomes impossible not to feel empathy for her situation 🤍

Ledger also surprised us a lot. At first, he seems more distant, but we quickly realize he’s a deeply emotional character who also carries the weight of loss and is now faced with what feels like an impossible choice.

The relationship between them is both beautiful and complicated. There’s an instant chemistry and a clear connection, but it’s deeply rooted in the past, in Scooty, and in the bond they both still share with Diem. Even though it feels clear from the start that, in order to find happiness, they’ll have to end up together, their relationship also emerges as a form of comfort and a response to trauma. This isn’t a light or idealized romance, it’s one born out of difficult circumstances.

Even if, at times, it may feel complicated or even questionable, the truth is that within the context of the story, it makes sense. It’s not perfect, but it’s real and it’s exactly what they both need in order to give Diem a stable and loving life.

This is, without a doubt, a book much more focused on emotional healing. It forces us to confront unimaginable situations in an attempt to start over and make the best of what we have left. It shows us that forgiveness isn’t simple or immediate, and that moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting the past, it means learning how to live with it.

It’s a raw, emotional, and deeply human read. It made us reflect on empathy, judgment, second chances, and perhaps most importantly: it reminds us that behind every mistake, there’s always a story and that things are rarely as black and white as they seem.

Sabíamos que este livro era adorado pelos fãs e que tinha uma história muito impactante, mas ainda assim, nada nos podia preparar para os temas intensos e complexos que aborda.

Esta não é uma história romântica em que as nossas personagens enfrentam alguns obstáculos em direção ao felizes para sempre. É uma narrativa profundamente emocional que explora temas como perda, culpa, redenção e perdão.

Sinopse

A história acompanha Kenna Rowan, uma jovem que acabou de cumprir pena de prisão por um erro do passado que mudou completamente a sua vida. Determinada a reconstruir a sua vida, Kenna tem apenas um objetivo em mente: voltar a fazer parte da vida da sua filha, Diem, que nunca teve oportunidade de conhecer.

No entanto, esse caminho está longe de ser fácil. As pessoas à sua volta, especialmente aquelas que também sofreram com o que aconteceu, não estão dispostas a perdoar ou esquecer. Para muitos, Kenna será sempre definida pelo pior momento da sua vida e Diem deve ser mantida longe dela, custe o que custar.

Ledger Ward, também foi afetado pelo erro de Kenna. Porém, contra todas as expectativas, Ledger não só começa a sentir que talvez todos tenham sido injustos com Kenna, como começa a criar uma ligação com ela.

A nossa opinião

Uma das coisas que mais nos marcou neste livro é o facto de não existirem maus da fita nem vilões. Todos os personagens estão a lidar com a mesma tragédia, mas de formas diferentes, e isso faz com que seja impossível apontar o dedo de forma simples.

Temos um conjunto de pessoas profundamente marcadas pela dor, pela perda e pelas consequências de decisões passadas. Cada uma tenta seguir em frente da melhor forma que consegue e, por vezes, isso leva a atitudes que acabam por magoar os outros. São reações que vêm da dor e de tentar proteger a paz que lhes resta.

A Kenna é, sem dúvida, uma personagem complexa e difícil de analisar devido às emoções que carrega consigo. Sabemos que cometeu um erro grave, mas ao longo da história vamos percebendo também o seu arrependimento, a sua vulnerabilidade e o quanto está disposta a fazer para tentar melhorar e ultrapassar o passado. É impossível não sentir empatia pela situação dela 🤍.

O Ledger também nos surpreendeu bastante. Inicialmente, parece alguém mais distante, mas rapidamente percebemos que é uma personagem profundamente emocional, que carrega também o peso da perda e que enfrenta agora uma escolha que parece impossível.

A relação entre os dois é simultaneamente bonita e complexa. Existe uma química instantânea, bem como uma ligação evidente entre os dois, mas esta está muito enraizada no passado, no Scooty e na ligação que continuam a ter com a Diem. Ainda que seja claro desde o início que para serem felizes, terão de ficar juntos no final, a relação deles surge também como uma forma de conforto e de resposta para com o trauma. Não é um romance leve nem ideal, mas um que nasce em circunstâncias difíceis.

Mesmo que, em certos momentos, possa parecer complicado ou até questionável, a verdade é que dentro do contexto da história faz sentido. Não é perfeito, mas é real e é exatamente o que ambos precisam para poderem dar uma vida tranquila à Diem.

Este é, sem dúvida, um livro muito mais focado na cura emocional que nos obriga a confrontar situações impensáveis, numa tentativa de recomeçar e de tentar fazer o melhor possível com o que nos resta. Mostra-nos que o perdão não é algo simples nem imediato e que seguir em frente não significa esquecer o passado, mas sim aprender a viver com ele.

É uma leitura crua, emocional e profundamente humana. Fez-nos refletir sobre empatia, julgamento, segundas oportunidades, e talvez o mais importante: lembra-nos que, por detrás de cada erro, existe sempre uma história e que nem tudo é tão preto no branco como parece. A nossa classificação são 4 estrelinhas ⭐!
