⚔ Book review: Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas ⚔
After reading Throne of Glass, we completely fell in love with Celaena, Dorian and Chaol’s world, so we were incredibly excited to continue our journey through this universe. If you haven’t read Throne of Glass or Crown of Midnight, we definitely recommend skipping this post for now. We absolutely love having you here, but we don’t want spoilers ruining your reading experience 🤍.
Summary
Celaena won the competition and is now the King of Adarlan’s Champion, carrying out his dark orders by eliminating enemies of the crown on behalf of the tyrant. However, Celaena is not exactly following the rules of the deadly game she has become trapped in… and that could cost her life.
While spying on her targets in preparation for their assassinations, Celaena witnesses acts of kindness that make it impossible for her to believe those people deserve to die. Her next target is someone extremely recognisable… and connected to her past. With only one month to present the victim’s head to the king, Celaena finds herself battling with her conscience over whether she should kill her target or allow them to escape.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Celaena and Dorian has completely changed after her victory. The two now maintain an awkward and uncomfortable friendship, unsure of how to behave around each other. With Chaol, however, things are very different. The attraction between them keeps growing stronger and it becomes impossible to ignore the feelings beginning to develop.
Our Opinion

In our opinion, the second book in this series is even better than the first one. Even though we know this may be considered a somewhat unpopular opinion — especially because the romance in this book is not many readers’ favourite — we genuinely felt that the plot was far more engaging and significantly increased our curiosity about the rest of the series.
It was incredibly interesting to follow Celaena’s moral conflict regarding the king’s orders. Even though she constantly lives in that grey area between good and evil, we were genuinely proud to see her refuse to blindly obey the commands she was given.
Celaena always gave us the impression that there was very little she wouldn’t do in order to survive. That’s why it was fascinating to watch her more human side overcome her survival instincts. When the argument between Celaena and Nehemia happens, we were genuinely heartbroken by everything that was said. Celaena is truly terrified that the king will use Chaol and Nehemia against her if she disobeys his orders. Above all, it hurt to see Nehemia accuse Celaena of caring about no one but herself… especially because she dies before they ever get the chance to reconcile. And as if that wasn’t enough, Celaena and Chaol’s relationship completely shatters right in front of our eyes.
Honestly, one of the things we loved most in this book was Celaena and Chaol’s relationship during those earlier moments together. Even though we had already come across spoilers from the fandom and knew they wouldn’t be endgame, we absolutely adored them together 😭.
The two of them balance each other in such an interesting way and honestly, we still don’t understand why Chaol receives so much hate, because right now, he’s one of our favourite characters. Truly, if anyone touches our golden trio, they’re taking everything from us 😭📚.
The end of their relationship after Nehemia’s death was absolutely devastating. And the truth is that neither of them is truly to blame for what happened. Both Chaol and Celaena are merely pawns in a cruel game, manipulated by someone willing to do anything to isolate Celaena from everyone she still has left.
The moment Celaena tries to kill Chaol, consumed by grief and rage, was brutal. Especially because she goes from someone willing to protect him with her own life… to someone completely unable to control her hatred in that moment. The fact that it’s Dorian who stops her makes the entire scene even more emotional. All of them suffered so much because of this.
And when we finally discovered that Archer was truly responsible for Nehemia’s fate, we were furious!😭 That slimy little rat! We genuinely didn’t see it coming and were completely caught off guard.
At first, we actually felt sorry for him and could understand some idealism behind his rebellion against the king. There seemed to be some nobility in his intentions. We were so innocent…
The revelation that Celaena is Fae wasn’t a complete shock. We already suspected there was something different about her, but we weren’t expecting it to be hidden behind some sort of magical glamour. Chaol’s reaction, however, was completely understandable. After all, he grew up in a kingdom where magic is viewed as dangerous and monstrous. Even so, it was incredibly important to see him choose his feelings over his own prejudice, manipulating the situation in order to send Celaena to Wendlyn, where she would be safer among her own people.
The final revelation that Celaena is actually Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, heir to the throne of Terrasen, was both incredible and devastating. Especially when we realise, through the clues she leaves for Chaol, the emotional impact that discovery has on him.
At this point, what we feel most strongly is that none of these three protagonists are going to come out of this story emotionally intact. There is still so much suffering waiting for them… and we can only hope they manage to stay united throughout the rest of the saga.
Conclusion
Overall, Crown of Midnight deserves 4.5 stars from us ⭐.
This was a significantly more intense read than Throne of Glass and it triggered a much stronger emotional response from us. Besides, expanding the world-building and political elements of the story, this book deepened the relationships between the characters and left us even more emotionally invested in the future of the series.
We also became much clearer on the supposed love triangle. In our opinion, Celaena and Dorian’s relationship was mainly based on desire and physical attraction, which made the end of their relationship less emotionally painful for us. But with Chaol, things felt completely different. Beyond attraction, there was genuine affection, trust and deep mutual respect between them. Watching that relationship fall apart absolutely broke our hearts.
The ending left us completely desperate to continue the saga and honestly… we are terrified of all the suffering still waiting for us 😭📚.

Enquanto espia as suas vítimas para preparar os assassinatos, a Celaena presencia atos de bondade que não lhe permitem aceitar que aquelas pessoas mereçam morrer. O seu próximo alvo é alguém extremamente reconhecível… e ligado ao passado dela. Com apenas um mês para apresentar a cabeça da vítima ao rei, a Celaena batalha consigo mesma sobre o que fazer e se deverá matar o seu alvo ou permitir-lhe escapar.
Entretanto, a relação entre a Celaena e o Dorian mudou completamente após a vitória dela. Os dois mantêm agora uma amizade estranha e desconfortável, sem saber exatamente como agir um com o outro. Já com o Chaol, a situação é muito diferente. A atração entre ambos cresce cada vez mais e torna-se impossível ignorar os sentimentos que começam a surgir.

Na nossa opinião, o segundo livro desta saga é ainda melhor do que o primeiro. Apesar de sabermos que esta parece ser uma opinião algo impopular, principalmente devido ao romance apresentado não ser o favorito de muitos leitores, sentimos que o enredo é muito mais interessante e que aumentou imenso a nossa curiosidade relativamente ao resto da saga.
Foi muito interessante acompanhar o conflito moral da Celaena em relação às ordens do rei. Apesar de ela ser uma personagem que vive constantemente naquela zona cinzenta entre o bem e o mal, ficámos genuinamente orgulhosos ao vê-la recusar-se a seguir cegamente as ordens recebidas.
A Celaena sempre nos deu a sensação de que haveria muito pouco que ela se recusaria a fazer para sobreviver. Por isso, foi extremamente interessante ver o lado mais humano dela sobrepor-se aos seus instintos de autopreservação. Quando acontece a discussão entre a Celaena e a Nehemia, ficámos verdadeiramente tristes com tudo o que foi dito. A Celaena está genuinamente aterrorizada com a possibilidade de o rei usar o Chaol e a Nehemia contra ela, caso desobedeça às ordens recebidas. Acima de tudo, custou-nos bastante ver a Nehemia acusar a Celaena de não fazer nada por ninguém além dela própria… especialmente porque ela morre antes de conseguirem resolver os problemas entre as duas. E, como se isso não bastasse, a relação entre a Celaena e o Chaol estilhaça-se em pedacinhos mesmo em frente dos nossos olhos.
Sinceramente, um dos aspetos que mais adorámos neste livro foi precisamente a relação entre o Chaol e a Celaena naquela fase inicial. Apesar de já termos apanhado alguns spoilers vindos do fandom e sabermos que eles não serão endgame, adorámos o casal de morte 😭.
Os dois equilibram-se de uma forma muito interessante e, honestamente, não conseguimos perceber porque existe tanto ódio direcionado ao Chaol porque, neste momento, ele é uma das nossas personagens preferidas. Honestamente quem nos tira o trio maravilha, tira-nos tudo!
O fim da relação dos dois após a morte da Nehemia é absolutamente devastador, e a verdade é que nenhum deles é verdadeiramente culpado pelo que aconteceu. Tanto o Chaol como a Celaena são apenas peões de um jogo cruel, manipulados por alguém disposto a tudo para isolar a Celaena de todos os que lhe restam.
O momento em que ela tenta matar o Chaol, consumida pela dor e pela raiva, foi brutal. Principalmente, porque ela passa de alguém capaz de protegê-lo com a própria vida… para alguém incapaz de controlar o ódio naquele instante. O facto de ser o Dorian a impedi-la, torna toda a situação ainda mais emocional. Todos eles sofreram imenso com isto. Quando finalmente descobrimos que Archer é o verdadeiro responsável pelo destino da Nehemia, ficámos furiosos!😭 Maldito fuinha! Não adivinhamos e fomos completamente apanhados de surpresa!
Inicialmente tínhamos pena dele e conseguíamos perceber algum idealismo na sua rebelião contra o rei. Parecia existir alguma nobreza nas suas intenções. Fomos uns inocentes...
A revelação de que a Celaena é Fae não foi um choque absoluto. Já suspeitávamos que existia algo diferente nela, mas não estávamos à espera que estivesse escondido através de uma espécie de glamour mágico. Já a reação do Chaol foi compreensível. Afinal, estamos a falar de alguém que cresceu num reino onde a magia é vista como algo perigoso e monstruoso. Ainda assim, foi muito importante ver que ele escolheu colocar os sentimentos dele acima dos próprios preconceitos, manipulando a situação de forma a enviar a Celaena para Wendlyn, onde ela estaria mais segura entre os seus iguais.
A revelação final de que a Celaena é, na verdade, Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, herdeira do trono de Terrasen, foi simultaneamente incrível e devastadora. Especialmente quando percebemos, através das pistas deixadas ao Chaol, o impacto emocional que aquela descoberta teve nele.
Neste momento, aquilo que mais sentimos é que nenhum dos três protagonistas vai sair emocionalmente intacto desta história. Ainda existe muito sofrimento reservado para este trio… e só esperamos que consigam manter-se unidos ao longo da saga.
Conclusão
Concluindo, para nós, Coroa da Meia-Noite merece 4.5 estrelas ⭐. Foi uma leitura significativamente mais intensa do que Trono de Vidro e provocou uma resposta emocional muito mais forte da nossa parte. Além de expandir o mundo e os elementos políticos da história, este livro aprofundou imenso as relações entre as personagens e deixou-nos ainda mais investidos no futuro da saga.
Também ficámos mais esclarecidos relativamente ao suposto triângulo amoroso. Na nossa opinião, a relação entre a Celaena e o Dorian baseava-se sobretudo em desejo e atração física, o que fez com que o fim da relação deles não nos afetasse tanto emocionalmente. Já com o Chaol, sentimos algo completamente diferente: além da atração, existia carinho, confiança e um enorme respeito mútuo. Custou-nos muito assistir à destruição dessa relação.
O final deixou-nos completamente desesperados por continuar a saga e sinceramente… temos muito medo do sofrimento que ainda aí vem 😭📚.
