Today we're bringing you our review of Every Summer After by Carley Fortune, a book that completely stole our hearts and ended up becoming one of our favourite reads of the year.
We originally picked this one up because we wanted to read it before watching the tv show, and honestly? We weren't expecting to become so emotionally attached to these characters. What started as a perfect summer read, quickly became a story that left us feeling nostalgic, heartbroken and completely invested in Percy and Sam's journey.
Summary
Persephone Fraser spent every summer of her teenage years at a lake in Barry's Bay, where she formed an inseparable bond with Sam Florek and his family.
For six summers, Percy and Sam were everything to each other. Best friends. Confidants. First loves.
Then something happened.
Now, twelve years later, Percy returns to Barry's Bay for the first time in years and is forced to confront both her past and the people she left behind.
Our Opinion
This book felt like summer wrapped in pages.
More than anything else, Every Summer After captures a feeling. The feeling of childhood summers that seem endless. The feeling of having one place that feels more like home than anywhere else. The feeling of looking back at the past and wondering what might have happened if you'd made different choices.
One of our favourite aspects of the novel was the atmosphere. Barry's Bay feels alive throughout the entire story. The lake, the cabins, the docks and the summers spent outdoors create such a vivid setting that we genuinely felt transported there.
The nostalgia in this book is incredibly powerful. It reminded us of those special places we all have in our lives — the places that instantly make us feel younger and freer whenever we return to them.
We also loved the characters.
Percy is far from perfect, and that's exactly what makes her feel real. She spends much of the story carrying an enormous amount of guilt, and while some of her decisions are undeniably frustrating, we appreciated how human she felt throughout the book.
Sam is everything you'd want from a romance hero. Kind, loyal, patient and deeply caring, he's the emotional heart of the story. His relationship with Percy develops naturally over the years, making their connection feel authentic and believable.
And then there's Charlie.
We know the story isn't about him, but we have to admit he became one of our favourite characters. As the older brother, he often feels like the voice of reason within the family. He's protective, caring and constantly trying to remind Sam not to let life pass him by while waiting for the perfect moment.
The Florek family as a whole was one of our favourite parts of the novel. Every scene involving them felt warm, comforting and genuine.

The biggest emotional punch of the story is, without a doubt, the mistake that destroys Percy and Sam's relationship.
What happened between Percy and Charlie is painful to read, because there are no villains in this story. Nobody is trying to hurt anyone. Everyone is simply human, making terrible decisions in moments of weakness.
That doesn't make it any less heartbreaking.
While we genuinely love Charlie as a character, we never felt like he and Percy belonged together. For us, Sam and Percy were always inevitable. They are the emotional centre of the story from beginning to end.
One thing we particularly appreciated was how the novel handled guilt and forgiveness. Percy spends years carrying the weight of her mistake, and the emotional consequences feel realistic rather than rushed.
The reunion between Percy and Sam worked beautifully for us, because it never ignored the damage that had been done. Both characters needed time to heal before they could find their way back to each other.
Conclusion
Overall, we're giving Every Summer After 4 stars ⭐.
This was a nostalgic, emotional and incredibly comforting read, that perfectly captures the magic of summer, first love and second chances.
More than anything, this book reminded us that growing up often means making mistakes, living with the consequences and learning how to forgive both ourselves and others.
The characters felt real, the setting was beautiful and the emotional journey completely won us over.
If you're looking for a romance that feels like sunshine, lake water, long summer evenings and a little bit of heartbreak, we can't recommend this one enough.

Pegámos neste livro, porque queríamos lê-lo antes de ver a adaptação para série e, sinceramente? Não estávamos nada à espera de nos afeiçoarmos tanto a estas personagens. O que começou por parecer uma leitura perfeita para o verão acabou por se transformar numa história que nos deixou nostálgicos, de coração apertado e completamente envolvidos na jornada da Percy e do Sam.

Mais do que tudo, Cada Verão Passado transmite uma sensação. A sensação dos verões da infância que pareciam intermináveis. A sensação de existir um lugar que sabe mais a casa do que qualquer outro. A sensação de olhar para o passado e questionar o que teria acontecido se tivéssemos tomado decisões diferentes.
Um dos aspetos de que mais gostámos foi, sem dúvida, a atmosfera.
Barry's Bay ganha vida ao longo de toda a história. O lago, as cabanas, os cais e os dias passados ao ar livre criam um cenário tão vívido que sentimos verdadeiramente que estávamos lá.
A nostalgia presente neste livro é incrivelmente poderosa. Fez-nos lembrar aqueles lugares especiais que todos temos na nossa vida — lugares que, sempre que regressamos, nos fazem sentir mais jovens e livres.
Também adorámos as personagens.
A Percy está longe de ser perfeita e é precisamente isso que a torna tão real. Passa grande parte da história a carregar um enorme sentimento de culpa e, apesar de algumas das suas decisões serem claramente frustrantes, gostámos muito da forma como a autora a retrata de forma tão humana.
O Sam é tudo aquilo que esperamos encontrar num protagonista romântico. Bondoso, leal, paciente e profundamente carinhoso, é o verdadeiro coração emocional desta história. A relação entre ele e a Percy desenvolve-se de forma natural ao longo dos anos, tornando a ligação entre ambos genuína e totalmente credível.
E depois temos o Charlie.
Sabemos que a história não gira à volta dele, mas temos de admitir que acabou por se tornar uma das nossas personagens favoritas. Como irmão mais velho, assume muitas vezes o papel da voz da razão dentro da família. É protetor, atencioso e está constantemente a tentar lembrar o Sam de que não deve deixar a vida passar enquanto espera pelo momento perfeito.
Aliás, toda a família Florek foi uma das nossas partes favoritas do livro. Todas as cenas em que apareciam transmitiam uma sensação de calor, conforto e autenticidade.

O maior impacto emocional da história é, sem dúvida, o erro que destrói a relação entre a Percy e o Sam.
O que acontece entre a Percy e o Charlie é doloroso de ler, porque, nesta história, não existem vilões. Ninguém pretende magoar ninguém. São apenas pessoas humanas a tomar decisões terríveis em momentos de fragilidade.
Mas isso não torna a situação menos devastadora.
Apesar de gostarmos muito do Charlie enquanto personagem, nunca sentimos que ele e a Percy fossem feitos um para o outro. Para nós, o Sam e a Percy foram sempre inevitáveis. São o verdadeiro centro emocional da história do princípio ao fim.
Outro aspeto que apreciámos bastante foi a forma como o livro aborda a culpa e o perdão. A Percy passa anos a carregar o peso do seu erro e as consequências emocionais sentem-se reais, sem nunca parecerem apressadas.
O reencontro entre a Percy e o Sam resultou muito bem para nós, precisamente porque nunca ignora os estragos causados pelo passado. Ambos precisaram de tempo para sarar antes de conseguirem reencontrar o caminho um para o outro.
Conclusão
No geral, damos a Cada Verão Passado 4 estrelas ⭐.
Foi uma leitura nostálgica, emocionante e incrivelmente reconfortante, que capta na perfeição a magia do verão, do primeiro amor e das segundas oportunidades.
Mais do que tudo, este livro recordou-nos que crescer implica, muitas vezes, cometer erros, viver com as suas consequências e aprender a perdoar-nos a nós próprios e aos outros.
As personagens pareceram-nos genuínas, o cenário é maravilhoso e toda a viagem emocional nos conquistou por completo.
Se procuram um romance que transmite a sensação de sol na pele, mergulhos no lago, longos fins de tarde de verão e uma pequena dose de coração partido... não podemos recomendá-lo o suficiente.
