Book Review: The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas

After all, The Assassin's Blade was the missing piece we needed to truly understand Celaena Sardothien...

Hello everyone! We hope you're all doing well! 😊 We've been making the most of this week off to catch up on some overdue reviews, and today's one was probably the hardest to write... but it was also one of our favourite reads of the year!

The Assassin's Blade isn't just a collection of stories about the past of the protagonist from the Throne of Glass series. It's the emotional foundation behind every decision and every scar that shapes her throughout the books that follow.

We went into this book already knowing Sam's fate (after all, we'd already read Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight). We knew exactly where this story was heading and honestly believed that knowing the ending would somehow soften the emotional blow.

It didn't! Not even a little. 😥

Sarah J. Maas does something very few authors can accomplish: she makes us grieve for a character whose fate we already know is inevitable. The brutal description of Sam's injuries and everything he endured during his final hours was absolutely heartbreaking. We genuinely had to put the book down for a while...

If there's one thing this book does perfectly, it's showing us who Celaena truly is, and because of that, so many of her actions in the following books suddenly make complete sense.

After finishing The Assassin's Blade, it became even more painful to remember the moment Nehemia called Celaena a coward in Crown of Midnight. After witnessing everything that happened in Skull's Bay and seeing the punishment she and Sam endured, simply because they chose to free innocent slaves, it's impossible not to admire their courage for standing up to both Arobynn and Rolfe.

The Five Stories

One of the most impressive things about this book is that none of the novellas feel unnecessary. Each one reveals a different side of Celaena's character, while introducing people who seem destined to play important roles later in the series. Have we already met some of Terrasen's future allies? Maybe...

    ⚓ The Assassin and the Pirate Lord

This is probably the most adventurous story in the entire collection. Skull's Bay is such a vivid setting that it instantly reminded us of childhood dreams of becoming pirates. Celaena's decision to free innocent slaves, regardless of the consequences, immediately shows that beneath all the arrogance and sarcasm lies someone with an incredibly kind heart.

This is also where we truly started appreciating Sam and Celaena's relationship. Raised by Arobynn to compete against one another and constantly fight for the position of his favourite assassin, the two slowly become allies during the slave rescue, and that friendship gradually blossoms into something much deeper.

One of the standout characters in this novella is undoubtedly Rolfe. We genuinely hope he returns later in the series and hopefully redeemed and fighting on the right side this time.

    🌘 The Assassin and the Healer

This may be the shortest story in the collection, but it left a lasting impression. On her journey to train with the Silent Assassins, Celaena meets Yrene, a young woman working in a tavern while dreaming of becoming a healer.

When Yrene is attacked by a group of men, Celaena not only saves her life, but also teaches her the basics of self-defence. Although hesitant at first because she's terrified of hurting someone, Yrene quickly follows Celaena's guidance.

We loved the contrast between these two characters. While Celaena makes a living taking lives... Yrene dreams of dedicating hers to saving them.

    🏜️ The Assassin and the Desert

This one completely surprised us.It quickly became our favourite novella, largely because of Ansel, who ended up being one of the most memorable characters in the entire book. Which is exactly why her betrayal hurt so much.

For almost the entire story, we convinced ourselves that Mikhail was going to be the real traitor. We honestly don't even know why... we simply wanted Ansel to be innocent.

Once again, Sarah J. Maas masterfully directed our attention toward the wrong person the entire time.(cough cough Archer cough cough)

Despite everything, we still believe Ansel deserves redemption. As the rightful heir of Briarcliff, we can't help but think she'll eventually play an important role in the fight for Terrasen...

We truly hope she does.

    🗡️ The Assassin and the Underworld & The Assassin and the Empire

Sam Cortland... How can someone appear for such a short time and still leave such an enormous impact. When he and Celaena reunite, we couldn't stop counting how many happy moments they had left together. We knew Sam was going to die. And yet... Somehow we kept forgetting that the ending was getting closer with every page.

Just like Celaena, we laughed with him. We fell in love with his kindness, his quiet confidence, and his gentle nature. And despite already knowing the outcome... We kept hoping. Until the ground disappeared beneath our feet and our hearts shattered alongside Celaena's.

💀 Arobynn Hamel: The True Villain of This Book

He may genuinely be one of the most manipulative villains we've ever encountered in fantasy. He's not simply cruel. He's calculating. Everything he does follows the classic cycle of abuse:

• punish;
• isolate;
• reward;
• apologise;
• regain control;
• destroy all over again.

It's terrifying to realise that Celaena spent years trapped inside that cycle. Even more terrifying is understanding how much this explains her decisions later in the series. For someone who appears so fearless... She's still emotionally tied to the man who abused her for years.

Another thing this book finally helped us understand was why Celaena goes completly insane when Chaol disappears in Crown of Midnight. She becomes almost unstoppable in her determination to save him. Archer didn't choose her greatest fear by accident... He deliberately recreated Sam's death. He weaponised the worst trauma of her life, using it to lure her toward Chaol while keeping her away from Nehemia. It was a perfectly orchestrated manipulation.

🎀 Lysandra: Another Victim of Arobynn's Cruelty

We're incredibly curious to see where Lysandra's story goes next. Right now, there's simply too much resentment between her and Celaena, but looking at both of their lives... They're victims of the very same man. Victims of years of manipulation designed to turn them against one another.

We desperately hope they'll eventually reconcile and realise that neither of them was ever the enemy.

Final Verdict

This book deserves 5⭐ for sure. It's rare for a prequel to improve the main story.

But that's exactly what The Assassin's Blade does. It doesn't simply tell us about Celaena's past. It explains every scar she carries. We finished this book completely heartbroken and more convinced than ever that Throne of Glass is becoming one of our favourite fantasy series of all time.

If the series keeps this level of storytelling, it has every chance of earning a place on our all-time favourites shelf right beside Harry Potter.

Ao fim ao cabo, A Lâmina da Assassina era a peça que nos faltava para compreender a Celaena Sardothien...

Olá pessoal! Tudo bem? 😊 Andamos a aproveitar esta semaninha de férias para tratar das reviews mais atrasadas e a de hoje foi provavelmente das mais desafiantes de escrever, mas também foi um dos livros mais incríveis do ano!

A Lâmina da Assassina não é apenas uma coleção de histórias sobre o passado da nossa protagonista da saga Trono de Vidro. É a base emocional de todas as escolhas e atitudes que vimos no decorrer dos livros seguintes.

Entrámos nesta leitura já cientes do destino do Sam (afinal, já tínhamos lido Trono de Vidro e Coroa da Meia-Noite). Sabíamos perfeitamente onde esta história iria terminar e achávamos que isso nos iria proteger do impacto emocional que esta morte teria.

Não protegeu! Nem um bocadinho.😥

A Sarah J. Maas consegue fazer aquilo que poucos autores conseguem: fazer-nos sofrer por algo que já sabíamos que ia acontecer e por alguém cujo o destino era inevitável. A brutalidade da descrição dos ferimentos do Sam e do que ele suportou nas suas últimas horas... foi arrasadora e fez-nos parar a leitura por um pouco...

Se há uma coisa que este livro faz na perfeição é mostrar quem a Celaena realmente é e ajudar-nos a perceber um pouco mais da sua personalidade nos livros seguintes.

Depois de ler A Lâmina da Assassina, ficamos de coração partido ao relembrar a cena em que a Nehemia chamou cobarde à Celaena na Coroa da Meia-Noite. Depois de ler sobre o que aconteceu em Skull's Bay e em como ela e o Sam foram castigados por libertar os escravos... é impossível não admirar a coragem de ambos em ir contra o Arobynn e o Rolfe.

A sequência de cinco histórias

O mais impressionante deste livro é que nenhuma das histórias parece ter sido incluída ao acaso. Cada uma acrescenta uma camada diferente à personagem da Celaena e parece cruzar o seu caminho com personagens que serão fundamentais para o seu desenvolvimento nos livros que se seguem. Teremos conhecido alguns dos futuros aliados na defesa de Terrassen? Talvez...

    ⚓ A Assassina e o Lorde Pirata

Esta é provavelmente a história mais aventureira do livro. Skull's Bay é um cenário fantástico, que nos faz sonhar com a infância em que acreditávamos que ser um pirata seria a concretização de um sonho. A ideia de salvar pessoas inocentes da escravatura, independentemente das consequências, revela logo que por trás da máscara de arrogância e sarcasmo, a Celaena tem bom coração.

Foi também aqui que começámos a perceber melhor a dinâmica entre o Sam e a Celaena. Criados pelo Arobynn e treinados para serem rivais em constante competição pelo primeiro lugar como o melhor e o potencial segundo em comando, os dois acabam por se tornar aliados durante as fugas dos escravos e constroem uma amizade que lentamente se revela como sendo uma paixão.

Uma das personagens mais memoráveis nesta história é sem dúvida o Rolfe e esperamos honestamente que ele apareça mais tarde na saga. De preferência do lado certo da história e redimido das suas atitudes mais duvidosas!

    🌘 A Assassina e a Curandeira

É provavelmente a história mais pequena, mas foi inesquecível. A Celaena está em viagem para ser treinada pelos Assassinos Silenciosos e o seu caminhos cruza-se com o da Yrene, uma rapariga que trabalha numa taberna para sobreviver e sonha tornar-se uma curandeira.

Quando a Yrene é atacada por um grupo de homens, a Celaena salva-lhe a vida, mas também lhe ensina técnicas básicas para que ela se consiga defender de um ataque. Hesitante ao inicio, por temer magoar alguém, Yrene rapidamente acompanha as instruções da Celaena.

Gostámos muito do contraste entre estas personagens, porque enquanto que a Celaena tira vidas... a Yrene sonha dedicar a sua vida a salvá-las.

    🏜️ A Assassina e o Deserto

Esta foi uma enorme surpresa e pessoalmente a nossa história preferida com a personagem mais memorável, a Ansel. Talvez por isso a traição dela para com os Assassinos Silenciosos e a Celaen tenha doído tanto.

Durante praticamente toda a história convencemo-nos de que o verdadeiro traidor seria o Mikhail... Não sabemos bem, porquê mas queríamos acreditar que a Ansel seria inocente.

Mais uma vez, a Sarah J. Maas fez-nos olhar para o lado errado o tempo todo (coff coff Archer coff coff).

Apesar da traição, continuamos a acreditar que a Ansel ainda terá uma redenção! Como herdeira de Briarcliff, tudo aponta para que venha a desempenhar um papel importante quando chegar a altura de lutar por Terrasen...

Esperamos sinceramente que sim.

    🗡️ A Assassina e o Submundo & A Assassina e o Império

Sam Cortland... Como é que uma personagem aparece tão pouco e deixa um impacto tão grande em nós? Quando ele a Celaena se reúnem novamente, estávamos a antecipar quantos dias ainda teríamos de felicidade entre os dois. Sabíamos que o Sam ia morrer, mas ao mesmo tempo parecia que nos esquecíamos de forma constante de que o fim estava próximo.

Tal como a Celaena, rimos com ele, apaixonamo-nos pela sua atitude bondosa e descontraída, e... acreditamos até ao fim que haveria esperança. Até o chão nos sair debaixo dos pés e ficarmos de coração partido.

💀 Arobynn Hamel: o verdadeiro vilão deste livro

É talvez um dos melhores manipuladores que já encontrámos em fantasia. Não é apenas cruel! É calculista e tudo aquilo que faz segue exatamente o ciclo clássico do abuso:

• castiga;
• afasta;
• oferece recompensas;
• pede perdão;
• recupera o controlo;
• volta a destruir.

É assustador perceber que a Celaena vive presa neste ciclo durante anos. Mais assustador ainda é perceber como isso explica tantas das decisões que toma mais tarde e, em como até ela, que parece tão forte, está tão dependente do seu abusador.

Outra coisa que este livros nos mostrou, foi de onde vem o pânico da Celaena na Coroa da Meia-Noite quando o Chaol desaparece e como ela se torna quase um anjo da morte para o salvar. O Archer não escolheu o medo dela ao acaso... Ele recriou exatamente o trauma do Sam. Usou a pior memória da vida dela contra ela para a atrair até ao Chaol e para a afastar da Nehemia. Foi uma manipulação perfeitamente bem orquestrada.

🎀 Lysandra: mais uma vitima da crueldade do Arobynn

Ficámos muito curiosos com o futuro desta personagem. Neste momento existe demasiado ressentimento entre ela e a Celaena. No entanto, olhando para a vida de ambas, as duas são vítimas do mesmo homem e dos seus jogos de criação de ressentimentos de uma com a outra.

Esperamos muito que exista uma reconciliação e que ambas percebam que foram vitimas mas que podem ser muito mais do que isso.

Veredicto Final

Este livro merece 5⭐! É raro uma prequela melhorar tanto a história principal, mas foi exatamente isso que aconteceu.

A Lâmina da Assassina não conta apenas o passado, explica todas as cicatrizes que a Celaena carrega consigo. Chegámos ao fim completamente devastados e absolutamente convencidos de que Trono de Vidro está a tornar-se uma das nossas sagas favoritas de sempre.

Se continuar neste nível, tem potencial para entrar diretamente no nosso pódio ao lado de Harry Potter.

Bem... Por hoje é tudo! Vamos voltar à apreciar o sossego de uns dias na aldeia, mas claro, trouxemos as nossas leituras para nos acompanhar... por isso talvez exista um update muito em breve! 📚✨
