Reading Diary #2 | The Love Hypothesis

It only took three chapters for us to start understanding why The Love Hypothesis has won over so many readers.

We're still at the very beginning of the story, but we've already caught ourselves looking at each other several times while reading and saying:

"Okay... this is not what we were expecting."

💭 Characters That Surprised Us

One of the most enjoyable parts of these first few chapters has been watching our first impressions change so quickly.

When we started the book, we were convinced Adam Carlson was going to be the cold, arrogant, impossible-to-like protagonist. After all, his reputation around the university doesn't exactly help.

But so far... the exact opposite has happened.

He's still reserved, incredibly sarcastic, and has that intimidating presence that makes anyone think twice before talking to him... but he has never been unfair to Olive. Quite the opposite. He's shown a level of patience and calm that we honestly weren't expecting.

We also completely changed our minds about Anh.

Our first thought immediately went to the famous girl code. It felt strange to imagine the best friend being interested in someone Olive had dated.

However, it quickly became clear that her guilt is genuine and that she and Olive share a truly beautiful friendship. It was one of those moments that reminded us we'd judged a character far too quickly.

As for Jeremy...

He still hasn't convinced us.

Not so much because of his relationship with Anh, but mostly because he spread the rumour that Olive and Adam were dating to practically the entire university.

That was one of those moments when we looked at each other and thought exactly the same thing:

"This really could have stayed between you two. 😑"

 

😂 The Fake Dating Has Officially Begun

We've finally reached the moment that sets the whole story in motion!

The conversations between Olive and Adam as they establish the "rules" of their fake relationship managed to be awkward, chaotic, and incredibly funny all at once.

It's impossible not to laugh at Olive's constant anxiety and the almost absurdly pragmatic way Adam approaches the whole situation.

We're only at the beginning of this arrangement... but we can already see why so many readers love this dynamic.

 

🤍 A Character We Loved Meeting

We also got to know Malcolm a little better.

He hasn't had much page time yet, but he won us over almost immediately.

The friendship he shows Olive brings such a lovely sense of warmth to the story, and we're really excited to see what role he'll play in the coming chapters.

 

👀 Our Theories

Like any good readers... we've already started theorising.

It's still far too early to draw any conclusions, but we've started wondering whether some kind of love triangle might appear or, at least, someone who'll complicate things between Olive and Adam.

We could be completely wrong... but half the fun of reading a book for the first time is exactly this: connecting the clues, imagining different possibilities, and debating every theory before turning the next page. 🤗

 

📚 What We're Hoping for in the Next Chapters

If just three chapters were enough to completely change our opinion of several characters...

We can't even imagine what's still to come.

So far, we completely understand why The Love Hypothesis has become one of the most recommended romance novels of recent years.

We're only at the beginning of the journey, but we're already fully invested in this story.

Bastaram três capítulos para começarmos a perceber porque é que A Hipótese do Amor conquistou tantos leitores.

Ainda estamos muito no início da história, mas já nos apanhámos várias vezes a olhar um para o outro durante a leitura e a dizer:

"Ok... isto não era nada o que estávamos à espera."

💭 Personagens que nos surpreenderam

Uma das coisas mais divertidas destes primeiros capítulos foi perceber como as nossas primeiras impressões começaram rapidamente a mudar.

Quando começámos o livro, estávamos convencidos de que o Adam Carlson seria aquele protagonista frio, arrogante e impossível de suportar. Afinal, a reputação dele dentro da universidade também não ajuda.

Mas, para já, aconteceu precisamente o contrário.

Continua reservado, extremamente sarcástico e com aquele ar intimidante que faz qualquer pessoa pensar duas vezes antes de lhe dirigir a palavra... mas nunca foi injusto com a Olive. Muito pelo contrário. Tem demonstrado uma paciência e uma calma que sinceramente não esperávamos encontrar.

Também mudámos completamente de opinião em relação à Anh.

O nosso primeiro pensamento foi imediatamente o famoso girl code. Parecia estranho imaginar a melhor amiga interessada no rapaz com quem a Olive tinha saído.

No entanto, rapidamente percebemos que a culpa que sente é genuína e que existe uma amizade muito bonita entre as duas. Foi um daqueles momentos em que percebemos que julgámos uma personagem demasiado cedo.

Já o Jeremy...

Continua a não nos convencer.

Não tanto pela relação com a Anh, mas sobretudo pela forma como espalhou pela universidade inteira o rumor de que a Olive e o Adam estavam juntos.

Foi daqueles momentos em que olhámos um para o outro e pensámos exatamente a mesma coisa:

"Isto podia perfeitamente ter ficado entre vocês. 😑"

😂 O fake dating começou oficialmente

Finalmente chegámos ao momento que dá origem a toda a história!

As conversas entre a Olive e o Adam para definirem as "regras" da relação falsa conseguiram ser simultaneamente desconfortáveis, caóticas e incrivelmente divertidas.

É impossível não rir da ansiedade constante da Olive e da forma quase absurdamente pragmática com que o Adam encara toda a situação.

Ainda estamos no início deste acordo... mas já percebemos porque é que tanta gente adora esta dinâmica.

🤍 Uma personagem que adorámos conhecer

Também conhecemos melhor o Malcolm.

Ainda apareceu pouco, mas conquistou-nos quase imediatamente.

A amizade que demonstra pela Olive trouxe uma leveza muito bonita à história e estamos muito curiosos para perceber qual será o papel dele nos próximos capítulos.

👀 As nossas teorias

Como bons leitores... já começámos a teorizar.

Ainda é muito cedo para tirar conclusões, mas começámos a perguntar-nos se poderá surgir aqui algum tipo de triângulo amoroso ou, pelo menos, alguém que venha complicar a relação entre a Olive e o Adam.

Pode ser que estejamos completamente errados... mas metade da diversão de ler um livro pela primeira vez é precisamente esta: ligar pistas, imaginar possibilidades e discutir todas as teorias antes de virar a página seguinte 🤗.

📚 O que esperamos dos próximos capítulos

Se três capítulos foram suficientes para nos fazer mudar de opinião sobre várias personagens...

Nem queremos imaginar o que ainda vem aí.

Por enquanto, percebemos perfeitamente porque é que A Hipótese do Amor é um dos romances mais recomendados dos últimos anos.

Ainda estamos muito no início da viagem, mas já estamos completamente investidos nesta história.
