When an Adaptation Misses the Heart of the Book: Our Review of Every Year After (Season 1)

Hello everyone! 🤗 We're finally back with a review of a show we had been incredibly excited to watch. However, as you've probably guessed from the title, we ended up feeling a little disappointed.

Every Year After is based on Carley Fortune's novel Every Summer After. If you've been following our page for a while, you'll know that we read the book earlier this year and absolutely loved the experience! So, when we found out that Prime Video was adapting it into a show, and after how much we enjoyed the screen adaptation of the first Off-Campus novel, we genuinely thought we were about to get two fantastic book adaptations within just a few months.

Unfortunately, things didn't quite turn out the way we had hoped.

The trailer gave us confidence that we were about to see the characters we had fallen in love with brought to life on screen... At first, we gave the show the benefit of the doubt. After all, we were only just being introduced to the characters and their dynamics, and no adaptation can ever be 100% faithful to its source material. But after two or three episodes, it became clear that we weren't going to get the Percy, Sam, and Charlie we had imagined while reading the novel.

As a TV show, Every Year After is entertaining and does a good job of pulling you into its world of summer drama. As an adaptation, however, it leaves a lot to be desired. If you've never read Every Summer After, you'll probably enjoy the show much more and appreciate the story and the relationships it creates.

It has drama, romance, emotional tension, complicated friendships, and a beautiful summer aesthetic that makes it an easy watch. But if you've read the book... prepare yourselves for a serious exercise in separating the show from the original story and letting go of the Florek brothers you came to love. In this adaptation, the biggest casualty isn't really the plot. It's the characters, who for the most part, have been stripped away of their personalities.

 

🌿Overall Strenghts

    🎵 The Soundtrack

Without a doubt, the soundtrack is one of the show's biggest strengths and probably its most memorable aspect. It's been a long time since we've watched a teen drama with such a strong music selection. It reminded us of shows like The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, where every single song felt carefully chosen to enhance the emotion of each scene.

Ever since we finished the show, we've had the playlist on repeat! Songs like "Light On," "Northern Attitude," "Spring Into Summer," and "Until We Meet Again" have even found a place on our road trip playlist. It's genuinely that good.

Watching her struggle between staying in a relationship that's slowly making her unhappy or taking a leap into the unknown with someone as unexpected as Jordie, someone who understands what she needs even before she does, was genuinely one of our favourite parts of the season. We honestly hope next season gives them even more screen time.

At first, we really didn't like her, but episode after episode, she became far more interesting than we ever expected. We absolutely hated the affair storyline involving Charlie! It felt completely unnecessary and only reminded us of the final argument between Delilah and Percy in the novel, where Delilah is criticised for throwing herself into relationships without considering the consequences. Changing that part of the story completely undermines what we loved about her character.

    🌿 The Setting

The scenery is absolutely beautiful. The lake, the cabins, the tavern... Everything perfectly captures that nostalgic summer holiday atmosphere that made the novel so special. We were perhaps expecting slightly brighter, more vibrant cinematography, but even so, the setting remains one of the show's greatest strengths.

The tavern is easily our favourite location! It honestly made us want to move to Barry's Bay just so we could spend our evenings there with friends, ordering pierogis. 🥟

 

    📺 Changes to the Story

Some of the new scenes actually improve the story! Not every change was a bad one. The scene where Sue helps Percy through her first period was one of the most beautiful moments of the entire season.

It gives us a much deeper understanding of their relationship. Sue stops feeling like she's simply "the boys' mother," and instead we truly see the almost maternal love she's always had for Percy, and why Percy's grief over losing her feels so profound. After all, Sue was, in many ways, a second mother to her.

Interestingly enough... in this adaptation, our favourite characters weren't even the main couple.

First of all, Jordie. The absolute MVP of the season! If there were an award for carrying the entire show... 🏆

In the novel he's barely explored, but the show gives him so much more depth. We loved the way he interacts with his friends and how he always tries to guide the people around him through life's most difficult moments. We're incredibly curious to see where the writers take his story next, especially, because of another character we absolutely loved, Chantal.

She was such a pleasant surprise, we won't lie! Her storyline is a little cliché, but when paired with Jordie's, it becomes incredibly charming! She starts out as the classic big-city girl determined to resist the charm of a small lakeside town... only to fall victim to Barry's Bay's magic, and, of course, to our beloved Jordie's charm.

Then there's Delilah.

That said, once the divorce happens and we see her struggling to rebuild her life while trying to stay strong, she becomes much more human, and a lot more compelling.

We're also starting to suspect there's going to be a love triangle involving these three characters. Jordie has been there for both Chantal and Delilah whenever they've needed him. Being kind and supportive simply comes naturally to him, although the truth is... both women clearly need a Jordie in their lives, but which one will he ultimately choose? 😶👀

 

🧨 Downsides

Where the show falls short?

Unfortunately, it struggles with the most important aspect of all: the main characters and the relationships between them. We're not talking about minor changes. We're talking about the very essence of Percy, Sam and Charlie.

Especially the Florek brothers. There are moments when they simply stop feeling like the Sam and Charlie we came to know and love in the novel. Not physically, because honestly, whether an actor perfectly matches a character's physical description has never mattered that much to us. What truly matters is whether they capture the character's heart and personality.

The only moments when we genuinely thought, "that's Sam" were:

As for Charlie, the only time he truly convinced us was during the summer when he tries to cheer Percy up after she's been ignored by Sam and when they become locked inside the shack and Percy suffers a panic attack.

 

Other than that, both Sam and Charlie lose much of the personality that made them so special in the novel, and instead become two jerks who treat Percy terribly whenever it suits them. Honestly, there's no way these boys were raised by Sue, and that was incredibly difficult to overlook, even when we tried to separate the show from the original story.

To be completely honest, the ending felt underwhelming. We understand that the goal is to build a story that spans multiple seasons, and to a certain extent, it makes sense to leave a few storylines open. Even so, we were hoping for a more satisfying conclusion to this first chapter of the story. It didn't need to tie everything up perfectly, but we wanted to feel like this season had reached a proper ending, and that Percy and Sam's story had come full circle, leaving room for other characters to take centre stage in future seasons.

 

🎭 The Performances

Overall, we think the cast did a great job.

We were particularly impressed by Joseph Chiu (easily the biggest green flag among all the men in this universe 💚), Aurora Perrineau (who, by the way, has one of the most beautiful names we've ever heard 😂), Abigail Cowen (we honestly hadn't seen much of her work before, but she proved to have fantastic comedic timing in several scenes), Elisha Cuthbert (is there anything this woman appears in without instantly lighting up the screen like sunshine?) and the younger cast: Juliette Hawk, Blue Clarke, and Carson MacCormac.

They all captured their characters' personalities beautifully and even added little touches that made the story feel richer.

As for the actors portraying the adult versions, Sadie Soverall, Matt Cornett, and Michael Bradway, we think they still have a lot to prove. Not because they're bad actors, but because they'll need to convince readers that these older versions are still the same beloved characters we fell in love with in the novel! We genuinely hope Season 2 gives them that opportunity.

 

💭 Is It Worth Watching?

So, the big question always be: is this show worth your time? Our answer is yes. BUT... it all depends on your expectations!

If you’ve never read the book: you'll probably have a great time and it’ll be your perfect summer show.

If you're a fan of the novel: go into it with managed expectations and a very open mind. The show works much better once you stop thinking of it as a faithful adaptation and start seeing it as a show merely inspired by the original novel.

We'll definitely be watching Season 2. Despite our reservations about this adaptation, we genuinely believe it still has plenty of potential, especially if the writers manage to recapture the essence of the characters that made us fall in love with the book in the first place.

Olá pessoal! 🤗 Finalmente voltamos com a análise de uma série que estávamos super entusiasmados por ver, mas como já podem ter percebido pelo titulo, acabamos um pouco desiludidos.

Every Year After é baseada no romance Cada Verão Passado da Carley Fortune. Se já seguem esta página há algum tempo, sabem que acabamos o livro ainda este ano e que adorámos a experiência! Quando vimos que a Prime ia lançar a série, e depois do sucesso que foi a adaptação ao ecrã do primeiro livro da saga Off Campus, estávamos lançados para ter duas adaptações incríveis numa questão de meses.

No entanto, nada correu exatamente como esperávamos.

O trailer deu-nos confiança que íamos ver as personagens que adorámos no ecrã... Inicialmente, ainda demos o benefício da dúvida, porque estávamos a ser apresentados às dinâmicas e nem sempre podemos ser 100 % fiéis ao livro, mas passado 2 ou 3 episódios, tudo ficou mais claro: não íamos ver a Percy, o Sam e o Charlie como os imaginámos no livro.

Como série, Every Year After consegue entreter e puxa-nos para o seu mundo de dramas de verão. Como adaptação, deixa muito a desejar. Se nunca leram Cada Verão Passado, provavelmente vão divertir-se e desfrutar bastante mais da história e dinâmicas criadas.

Tem drama, romance, tensão, amizades complicadas e uma estética de verão muito agradável. Agora, se leram o livro... preparem-se para fazer um enorme exercício de desligar o cérebro da obra original e esquecer os que os irmãos Florek podiam ter sido. Nesta adaptação, quem mais sofre não é propriamente a história. São as personagens, que na sua grande maioria, acabaram a ter a sua personalidade destruída e completamente esquecida.

Pontos positivos

    🎵 A banda sonora

É, sem dúvida, uma das grandes estrelas da série e provavelmente a parte mais memorável. Há muito tempo que não víamos uma série teen/drama com uma seleção musical tão forte. Fez-nos lembrar produções como Diários do Vampiro ou Os Originais, onde cada música parecia escolhida ao detalhe.
Desde que acabámos a série temos ouvido constantemente a playlist! Inclusive músicas como Light On, Northern Attitude, Spring Into Summer e Until We Meet Again, encontraram o caminho para a nossa playlist de viagem. É mesmo boa!

    🌿 O cenário

As paisagens são lindíssimas. O lago, as casas, a taberna... Tudo transmite aquela sensação de férias de verão que o livro também consegue criar. Talvez esperássemos uma fotografia um pouco mais vibrante e luminosa, mas continua a ser um dos pontos fortes da série.

A taberna é francamente a melhor parte! Fez-nos querer viver em Barry's Bay para podermos passar as noites com amigos a pedir pierogis 🥟 .

    📺 Mudanças na história

Algumas cenas novas acrescentam valor! Nem todas as alterações foram negativas. A cena em que a Sue acompanha a Percy na sua primeira menstruação foi um dos momentos mais bonitos da temporada.

Ajuda-nos a perceber muito melhor a relação entre ambas. A Sue deixa de parecer apenas "a mãe dos rapazes" e percebemos verdadeiramente o carinho quase maternal que sempre teve pela Percy, e o motivo pelo qual a Percy sente tanto esta perda. Para todos os efeitos, foi uma segunda mãe para ela.

Curiosamente... nesta versão da história, as personagens que mais gostámos nem sequer foram o casal principal.

Em primeiro lugar, o Jordie! O verdadeiro MVP da temporada! Se houvesse um prémio para quem carregou a série às costas... 🏆

No livro é um personagem muito pouco explorado, mas na série ganha um protagonismo incrível e conquista-nos pela sua forma de interagir com os amigos e pela maneira como tenta ver a vida e guiar os outros nos momentos mais difíceis. Ficámos muito curiosos para perceber o rumo que lhe vão dar nas próximas temporadas, principalmente, para acompanhar a história dele com outra personagem que adorámos, a Chantal.

Também foi uma agradável surpresa, não vamos mentir! A história dela é meio cliché, mas quando combinada com a do Jordie fica super divertida! Começa como uma típica rapariga da grande cidade, pronta para resistir a todos os encantos da cidade pitoresca, mas acaba por ser vitima do charme do ambiente, e claro, dos encantos do nosso querido Jordie.
O conflito interno relativamente a manter uma relação com alguém com quem começa a criar ressentimentos e partir rumo ao desconhecido com alguém tão improvável como o Jordie, que ouve e sabe do que ela precisa mesmo antes de ela o saber, é incrível de se ver e honestamente esperamos que a próxima temporada foque mais neles. 

Depois temos a Delilah.
No inicio, não gostávamos nada dela, mas, episódio após episódio, tornou-se muito mais interessante do que esperávamos. Detestamos a história do caso com o Charlie! Não teve sentido nenhum e só nos fez pensar na última discussão que ela e a Percy têm no livro em que a Delilah é acusada de ser demasiado atiradiça e sem limites no tipo de homens com quem se envolve. Mudança de história horrível e quebra completamente o que adorámos na personagem.

No entanto, a partir do momento em que acontece o divórcio e vemos a luta dela para manter a cabeça erguida, sentimos que ela se tornou uma personagem mais humana e muito mais interessante.

Já começamos também a sentir que vai existir uma triângulo amoroso entre estes três personagens. O Jordie esteve lá para a Chantal e para a Delilah sempre que ambas precisaram. É natural para ele ser carinhoso e apoiar todos, no entanto a verdade é... ambas as meninas claramente precisam de um Jordie na vida delas, mas qual será a escolha final? 😶👀

🧨 Pontos negativos

Onde é que a série falha?

Infelizmente, é no ponto mais importante: as personagens principais e a dinâmica entre as mesmas. Não estamos a falar apenas de pequenas alterações. Estamos a falar da essência da Percy, do Sam e do Charlie.

Especialmente dos irmãos Florek. Há momentos em que simplesmente deixam de parecer o Sam e  o Charlie que conhecemos e adorámos na história. Não fisicamente, porque honestamente, independentemente de o ator ser super parecido com a descrição ou não, o que nos importa mais é se a essência e o caráter da personagem estão lá.

Os únicos momentos em que realmente sentimos "este é o Sam" foram:

• a cena do livro de Anatomia;
• e as cenas interpretadas pelo Blue Clarke, o ator que interpreta a versão mais nova do Sam.

Já o Charlie, só nos convenceu verdadeiramente durante o verão em que tenta animar a Percy depois de esta ser ignorada pelo Sam e quando ela tem um ataque de pânico na cena em que estão trancados no barracão.

Fora isso, ambos perderam muito da personalidade que os tornava especiais no livro e tornam-se dois imbecis que tratam a Percy abaixo de cão quando lhes convêm. Claramente, estes rapazes não podem ter sido criados pela Sue e isso foi difícil de ignorar, mesmo quando desligamos da obra original.

Sendo 100 % honestos, o final sabe a pouco. Percebemos perfeitamente que a intenção é desenvolver várias temporadas e até certo ponto faz sentido deixar algumas coisas em aberto. No entanto, sentimos falta de uma conclusão mais satisfatória para esta primeira fase da história. Não tinha de ser perfeito, mas precisávamos de sentir que esta temporada tinha um verdadeiro final e que a história da Percy e do Sam tinha chegado ao fim, dando espaço para outros personagens serem os próximos protagonistas.

🎭 As atuações

De forma geral, o elenco fez um bom trabalho. Gostámos particularmente das interpretações do Joseph Chiu (a maior bandeira verde entre todos os homens deste universo💚), da Aurora Perrineau (que já agora tem o nome mais lindo que já vimos 😂), da Abigail Cowen (honestamente ainda não tínhamos visto muitos trabalhos dela, mas provou ter uma habilidade cómica para determinados momentos), da Elisha Cuthbert (há alguma coisa em que esta mulher participe e em que ela não aqueça a cena como um raio de sol?) e ao grupinho de atores que interpretaram as versões mais novas: Juliette Hawk, Blue Clarke e Carson MacCormac.

Todos eles conseguiram captar as personalidades das suas personagens e até acrescentar pequenos detalhes que melhoraram a historia.

Já os atores que interpretam as versões adultas, a Sadie Soverall, o Matt Cornett e o Michael Bradway, ainda têm muito para provar. Não porque são maus atores, mas porque terão de conseguir convencer os leitores de que estas novas versões continuam a ser as personagens que tanto gostámos no livro! Esperamos mesmo que a segunda temporada lhes dê essa oportunidade.

💭Vale a pena?

Bem, a pergunta final será sempre: vale a pena perderem o vosso tempo a ver esta série? A resposta é sim. MAS... depende da expectativa! 

Se nunca leram o livro: provavelmente vão gostar bastante e será a vossa série perfeita de verão.

Se são fãs do livro: entrem na onda com expectativas controladas e com uma mente muito aberta, uma vez que funciona melhor quando deixamos de pensar nela como uma adaptação e começamos a vê-la apenas como uma série inspirada na obra original.

Vamos, sem dúvida, acompanhar a segunda temporada. Apesar das reservas que temos relativamente à adaptação, acreditamos que ainda há muito potencial para crescer, especialmente se conseguirem recuperar a essência das personagens que nos fizeram apaixonar pelo livro.
