Book review: The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

If there’s one book that left us smiling from beginning to end, it was The Love Hypothesis!

Hello everyone! How are you doing? 🤗 Today we're bringing you another review of one of our most entertaining reads of the summer.

We didn't feel the need to pretend that this is a book that will revolutionize literature, or that it's particularly complex or profound. That's not the point. And honestly? That's a good thing. Because sometimes all we want from a book is to have fun, fall in love with the characters, get annoyed at the villains, desperately wait for the next kiss and finish the book with that wonderful feeling of, “That was so good!”

That's exactly what happened to us, and that's why we're making it clear right away that this was a 5⭐ read for us.

 

Academia, science and a competition that felt a little too familiar

Perhaps one of the things we enjoyed the most was the academic setting.

We are both engineering students, so we're way too familiar with laboratories, workshops, lectures, demanding professors and, above all, that academic competition that can sometimes become… intense.

So following Olive through this world gave us a little bit of PTSD in the sense of, “This is way too familiar.”

But at the same time, that's precisely what made the story so much fun for us. There was something comforting about seeing that environment transformed into a romantic comedy, especially during the summer, when we were really in need of a light read.

 

Adam and Olive ❤️

We loved these two characters.

Olive is funny, intelligent, determined and, despite her insecurities, an incredibly strong woman. We particularly loved seeing the shift in her personality when she starts realizing that she doesn't have to let other people's opinions determine her worth.

And Adam… well.

Adam Carlsen is the kind of man who initially seemed absolutely impossible to tolerate, but who quickly won us over.

We pretty much realized from the beginning that Adam really liked Olive. It was obvious! And perhaps that's one of the funniest things about the story: as readers, we were constantly waiting for them to finally realize what seemed obvious to everyone around them.

The fact that he had been in love with her for so long made everything even better.

And that first kiss in the lab? Perfect timing. Right, Adam?

It was literally a coincidence of fate! If Olive had kissed someone else that night, this story probably never would have happened. And it was precisely that coincidence that set everything in motion.

Sometimes, all a good rom-com needs is one perfectly timed coincidence.

 

And then there's Tom

Oh, Tom! His downfall was honestly one of the most satisfying parts of the book.

From early on, we started feeling that something about his story didn't quite add up. When Adam explains what happened during the time when he, Tom and Holden were all working under the same professor, we began to understand that there was a huge difference between what Tom had inherited and what Adam had built.

As Holden so perfectly pointed out, Tom was practically handed what we could consider a well-oiled machine.

Adam, on the other hand, had to start from scratch.

He built his own lab, developed his own research and got to where he is essentially through his own hard work. And that makes it even more infuriating to watch Tom try to undermine Olive and, even worse, attempt to take advantage of her work.

When Olive finally decides to tell Adam everything and Tom starts realizing that he could lose everything and that the situation is slipping out of his control, his reaction only confirms what we had already suspected.

And when he decides to insult Olive in front of Adam? We just looked at each other like, “This is it.”

And honestly, it was a completely deserved downfall.

 

The romance we needed

One of the things we loved the most was precisely the fact that the story doesn't rely solely on the idea of “they kissed, therefore they're now in love.”

They had already kissed. We already knew there were feelings there. The real problem was getting them to admit it to each other.

And that's where the story completely hooked us.

We were constantly waiting for that moment when they would finally say out loud what we had known from the very beginning.

And when it finally happened? FINALLY!

That was our absolute moment of madness hahaha.

 

A book that came at exactly the right time

Perhaps this is ultimately the main reason behind our rating.

We were going through a slightly slower phase with our reading (work doesn't always help). It's not that we had necessarily been reading bad books before this one, but we felt like we needed to rediscover that excitement of picking up a book simply because we wanted to know what happened next.

The Love Hypothesis did exactly that!

It was light, funny, romantic, dramatic in just the right amount and full of moments that made us smile, roll our eyes, get annoyed and, most importantly, keep reading.

We finished the book on Saturday morning and almost immediately wanted to pick up two more romances.

That tells us quite a lot.

We're still, of course, continuing our read of The Hunger Games, but we ended up turning the weekend into a little reading session, and we feel that this book played a huge part in bringing that excitement back.

 

So… does it deserve the 5 stars?

For us, yes.

It's not that this is a perfect book. It's not one of those sophisticated novels that's going to win awards. For us, it deserves this rating because we had so much fun reading it! The characters, the romance, Tom's downfall, the familiar academic setting, the drama, the humour and the emotion… For us, it absolutely earned the 5 stars we gave it.

If you're looking for a light, fun and romantic read, The Love Hypothesis is perfect for you.

And now we're even more curious about Ali Hazelwood's other books, especially Love, Theoretically.

Se há um livro que nos deixou felizes do início ao fim, foi a Hipótese do Amor!
Olá pessoal! Tudo bem? 🤗 Hoje trazemos-vos mais uma review de uma das leituras mais divertidas do nosso verão.

Não sentimos necessidade de fingir que este é um livro que vai revolucionar a literatura, nem que seja particularmente complexo ou profundo. Não é esse o objetivo. E sinceramente? Ainda bem. Porque às vezes tudo o que queremos de uma leitura é divertirmo-nos, apaixonarmo-nos pelas personagens, ficar irritados com os maus da fita, esperar desesperadamente pelo próximo beijo e terminar o livro com aquele sentimento maravilhoso de “isto foi tão bom!”.
Foi exatamente o que nos aconteceu, e por isso, deixamos já claro que esta foi para nós uma leitura 5⭐.

Academia, ciência e uma competição demasiado familiar

Talvez uma das coisas que mais nos divertiu tenha sido o ambiente académico.

Ambos estudamos e somos engenheiros, por isso estamos demasiado familiarizados com laboratórios, oficinas, aulas teóricas, professores exigentes e, sobretudo, aquela competição académica que às vezes consegue tornar-se… intensa.

Por isso, acompanhar a Olive neste mundo teve um pequeno PTSD de “isto é demasiado familiar”.

Mas ao mesmo tempo, foi precisamente isso que tornou a história tão divertida para nós. Havia qualquer coisa reconfortante em ver aquele ambiente transformado numa comédia romântica, especialmente durante o verão, quando estávamos mesmo a precisar de uma leitura leve.

Adam e Olive ❤️

Adoramos estas duas personagens.

A Olive é divertida, inteligente, determinada e, apesar das suas inseguranças, uma mulher incrivelmente forte. Gostámos particularmente quando começamos a ver a inversão na personalidade dela quando começa a confiar que não precisa de deixar que as opiniões dos outros determinem aquilo que ela vale.

E o Adam… bem.

O Adam Carlsen é o tipo de homem que parecia absolutamente impossível de suportar, mas que rapidamente nos conquistou.

Nós percebemos praticamente desde o início que o Adam gostava imenso da Olive. Era óbvio! E talvez essa seja uma das coisas mais divertidas da história: nós, enquanto leitores, estávamos constantemente à espera que eles finalmente percebessem aquilo que parecia evidente para toda a gente à volta deles.

O facto de ele ter estado apaixonado por ela durante tanto tempo também tornou tudo ainda melhor.

E aquele primeiro beijo no laboratório? Timing perfeito. Certo, Adam?
Foi literalmente uma coincidência do destino! Se a Olive tivesse beijado outra pessoa naquela noite, esta história provavelmente nunca teria acontecido. E foi precisamente essa coincidência que colocou tudo em movimento.

Às vezes, uma boa rom-com, só precisa de uma coincidência muito bem colocada.

E depois temos o Tom

Oh, o Tom! A queda dele foi honestamente uma das partes mais satisfatórias deste livro.

Desde cedo, começamos a sentir que havia qualquer coisa naquela história que não batia certo. Quando o Adam conta o que aconteceu durante o período em que ele, o Tom e o Holden, estavam sob orientação do mesmo professor, começámos a perceber que existia uma enorme diferença entre aquilo que o Tom tinha herdado e aquilo que o Adam tinha construído.

Como o Holden tão bem observava, o Tom recebeu praticamente o que podemos considerar como uma máquina bem oleada.

O Adam, por outro lado, teve de começar do zero.

Construiu o próprio laboratório, desenvolveu o próprio trabalho e chegou onde chegou essencialmente pelo seu próprio esforço. E isso torna ainda mais enfurecedor ver o Tom tentar desvalorizar a Olive e, pior ainda, tentar aproveitar-se do trabalho dela.

Quando finalmente a Olive decide contar tudo ao Adam e o Tom começa a perceber que pode perder tudo e que a situação está a fugir do controle dele, a reação dele só confirma aquilo que já suspeitávamos.

E quando ele decide insultar a Olive em frente ao Adam? Nós só ficamos a olhar um para o outro do estilo “é agora”.

E foi uma queda absolutamente merecida.

O romance de que precisávamos

Uma das coisas que mais gostamos foi precisamente o facto de a história não depender apenas do “eles beijaram-se, portanto agora estão apaixonados”.

Eles já se tinham beijado. Nós já sabíamos que havia sentimentos. O verdadeiro problema era eles admitirem-no um ao outro.

E foi aí que a história nos prendeu completamente.

Estávamos constantemente à espera daquele momento em que finalmente iam dizer em voz alta aquilo que nós já sabíamos desde o início.

E quando aconteceu? FINALMENTE!

Foi o nosso momento de loucura hahaha.

Um livro que chegou no momento certo

Talvez esta seja no fundo a razão principal para a nossa classificação.

Estávamos numa fase um bocadinho mais parada das nossas leituras (o trabalho nem sempre ajuda). Não que estivéssemos necessariamente a ler maus livros antes disto, mas sentíamos que estávamos a precisar de recuperar aquele entusiasmo de pegar num livro simplesmente porque queremos saber o que acontece a seguir.

A Hipótese do Amor fez exatamente isso!

Foi leve, divertido, romântico, dramático na medida certa e cheio de momentos que nos fizeram sorrir, revirar os olhos, ficar irritados e, principalmente, continuar a ler.

Terminamos o livro logo no sábado de manhã e praticamente quisemos logo pegar em mais dois romances.

Isso diz-nos bastante.

Continuamos, claro, com a nossa leitura de Os Jogos da Fome, mas acabámos por transformar o fim de semana numa pequena sessão de leitura e sentimos que este livro teve um papel enorme em recuperar este entusiasmo.

Então… vale as 5 estrelas?
Para nós, sim.

Não é que este seja um livro perfeito. Não é daqueles livros sofisticados que vai ganhar prémios. Para nós merece esta classificação, porque nos divertimos imenso! As personagens, o romance, a queda em desgraça do Tom, o ambiente académico familiar, o drama, o humor e a emoção… Para nós valeu absolutamente as 5 estrelas que lhe atribuímos.

Se estão à procura de uma leitura leve, divertida e romântica, A Hipótese do Amor é perfeita para vocês.
