House of the Dragon Season 1 Review | A Worthy Return to Westeros?

(English)

Hello, everyone! ๐Ÿ’›

After finishing House of the Dragon S1, we finally understand why so many people can't stop talking about it.

Before pressing play, we'd heard every possible opinion. Some people called it the worthy successor to Game of Thrones. Others said it couldn't compare.

Now that we've watched it ourselves, we must admit the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

And honestly? We had a fantastic time!

๐Ÿ‰The Dragons' designs

The dragons completely stole the show, of course! One of our biggest highlights was, without a doubt, the dragons designs.

Unlike Game of Thrones, where Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion shared a very similar design, every dragon here feels like a unique individual.

Caraxes immediately became one of our favourites. His long, serpent-like body makes him look unlike any dragon we've ever seen on screen, perfectly matching Daemon's unpredictable personality ๐Ÿ–ค.

Then there's Vhagar! Massive, ancient and terrifying.

The wrinkles, scars and worn scales constantly remind us that she's survived generations of dragon riders. She doesn't just look powerful, but she looks old enough to have earned every inch of that power ๐ŸคŽ.

And then there's Syrax ๐Ÿคญ, who is possibly the most pampered dragon in Westeros. There's something almost elegant and gentle about her design that perfectly reflects Rhaenyra herself.

๐Ÿ‘‘ The performances

If there's one actor who deserves every award imaginable it's Paddy Considine. His portrayal of King Viserys completely exceeded our expectations and is a masterclass on acting.

The throne room scene alone deserves a place among the greatest television moments we've ever watched. Heartbreaking and yet extremely powerful. Simply unforgettable.

Matt Smith also surprised us.

We already liked him before this series, but now we completely understand why George R. R. Martin has repeatedly said that Daemon Targaryen is one of his favourite characters.

He somehow manages to be charming, terrifying and completely unpredictable... often within the same scene.

⚔️ Politics, family... and war

One thing House of the Dragon does exceptionally well is reminding us that Westeros has never been about heroes versus villains.

Almost every character makes questionable decisions.

Some are easier to sympathise with and others... not so much ๐Ÿ˜ฌ (yes, Aegon. We're looking at you.)

We also really enjoyed seeing the relationship between young Rhaenyra and Alicent before everything fell apart.

Although we do wish the adaptation had kept the larger age gap between them from the books, their friendship still makes the coming conflict feel incredibly tragic.

๐Ÿ‘— Our only true disappointment

If we had one criticism, it would be that we would've loved to see more extravagant Targaryen fashion.

Especially Rhaenyra, the Kingdom's Delight.

The books constantly describe the Targaryens as a family surrounded by luxury, jewels and magnificent clothing during this era.

While the costumes are beautiful, we felt they sometimes lacked the royal extravagance we'd imagined while reading about this family.

⭐ Final thoughts

House of the Dragon doesn't try to recreate Game of Thrones. Instead, it tells a very different story.

This season is more focused on family relationships than on epic battles.

And that's exactly why it works.

We're officially invested in this story and cannot wait to continue with Season Two as soon as we can.

⭐ Rating: 4.5 / 5

If you're a fantasy fan or simply miss spending time in Westeros, we definitely think it's worth watching.

(Portuguรชs)

Olรก, pessoal!

E, honestamente? Nรณs divertimo-nos imenso!

๐Ÿ‰ O design dos dragรตes

Os dragรตes roubaram completamente o espetรกculo, claro!

๐Ÿ‘‘ As interpretaรงรตes

⚔️ Polรญtica, famรญlia... e guerra

Quase todas as personagens tomam decisรตes questionรกveis.

๐Ÿ‘— A nossa รบnica verdadeira desilusรฃo

Especialmente no caso da Rhaenyra, a Delรญcia do Reino.

⭐ Consideraรงรตes finais

A Casa do Dragรฃo nรฃo tenta recriar A Guerra dos Tronos.

⭐ Classificaรงรฃo: 4,5 / 5

Personagem favorita: Daemon Targaryen

๐Ÿฒ Dragรตes favoritos: Caraxes e Meleys

๐ŸŽญ Melhor interpretaรงรฃo da temporada: Paddy Considine como Rei Viserys I

๐Ÿ’› Recomendamos? Absolutamente!
