Movie review: 40 Dates and 40 Nights

Hi everyone! 💛

It’s finally Friday! And is there anything better to watch after a long day at work than a light, fun and uncomplicated rom-com to switch off from the world for a little while? Probably not! 😌

That’s exactly what we found in 40 Dates and 40 Nights.

This is by no means a groundbreaking movie, nor does it try to reinvent the genre. But it delivers exactly what it promises: humour, romance, fun characters and a really lovely message about learning to believe in love again... and in ourselves.

After a week of emotionally devastating reading (we’ve been reading The Hunger Games series 👀), this is exactly the right choice for a relaxing night in.

💛 A protagonist who has given up on love

Cliché? Absolutely! But the truth is that Leah is an incredibly easy protagonist to understand.

Failed relationships, her parents’ divorce and years of collecting disappointments have made her believe that love and romance simply don’t exist.

So, when her grandmother Gigi gives her the seemingly ridiculous challenge of going on 40 dates in 40 nights in exchange for a full year of rent being paid, she eventually agrees... more because of the financial help than because she thinks she might actually find someone special.

And that’s exactly where the whole adventure begins.

😂 The humour works much better than we expected

The movie has quite a few genuinely funny moments.

From the incredibly awkward morning-after pill purchase to some absolutely disastrous dates (the cat guy will live forever in our memories 😂).

It’s all based on simple jokes, but honestly, they work and really help capture just how absurd some of these dates are!

❤️ Leah & Mason

The truth is that every rom-com ultimately revolves around its main couple, and in this movie, Leah and Mason’s relationship develops really naturally. There’s no instant love story like you sometimes get in romantic comedies.

In fact, they absolutely hate each other during their date. But their paths keep crossing and, inevitably, a friendship and a huge amount of chemistry start to develop between them.

And only much later do they both realise what the audience has known for quite a while. Obviously, Leah takes a little longer, because she insists on denying her feelings for far too long... 🙄

We also really liked Bianca and Steve, who end up becoming almost like a second family to Leah. Although, if we’re being honest, the credit for this entire evil plan to bring love back into Leah’s life can only go to Grandma Gigi, obviously.

🌼 The real message of the movie

For us, this ended up being much more of a movie about personal growth than it was about romance.

The 40 dates were never really Gigi’s goal. She just wanted her granddaughter to start living again, to step outside her routine and take some risks. To believe again that there are still good people out there who are worth loving.

🌟 The cast

Bailee Madison is absolutely adorable. We’ve liked her ever since Just Go With It, but here she proves that she can absolutely carry a leading role in a romantic comedy.

Joel Courtney also works really well as Mason. He has such a relaxed and likeable energy that it’s impossible not to root for him once we realise he’s fallen for Leah.

And then there’s Annie Potts, of course! 👑 Gigi practically steals every scene she’s in.

It’s impossible not to love her!

🎬 Is it worth watching?

If you’re looking for a fun rom-com for a Friday night, then yes, absolutely! ❤️

It’s not a movie that’s going to change the genre.

But it’s one of those movies that ends and leaves you with a smile on your face. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

It’s not particularly memorable, but it’s perfect if you’re looking for a light-hearted story, plenty of humour and a lovely message about learning to believe in love again.

Finalmente é sexta-feira! E haverá algo melhor para ver depois de um dia de trabalho do que uma comédia romântica leve, divertida e sem grandes complicações para desligar um bocadinho do mundo? Provavelmente não! 😌

Foi exatamente isso que encontrámos em 40 Dates and 40 Nights.

Este não é de todo um filme revolucionário nem pretende reinventar o género. Mas consegue entregar aquilo que promete: humor, romance, personagens divertidas e uma mensagem muito bonita sobre aprender a voltar a acreditar no amor... e em nós próprios.

Depois de uma semana de leituras emocionalmente devastadoras (andamos a ler a saga Os Jogos da Fome 👀), esta é exatamente a escolha certa para uma noite tranquila.

💛 Uma protagonista que já desistiu do amor

Cliché? Absolutamente! Mas a verdade é que a Leah é uma protagonista fácil de compreender.

Os relacionamentos falhados, o divórcio dos pais e anos a colecionar desilusões fizeram-na acreditar que o amor e o romance simplesmente não existem.

Por isso, quando a avó Gigi lhe propõe um desafio aparentemente absurdo de aceitar ter 40 encontros em 40 noites em troca de 1 ano de renda completamente pago, ela acaba por aceitar... mais pela ajuda financeira do que pela possibilidade de encontrar alguém especial.

E é precisamente aí que começa toda a aventura.

😂 O humor funciona muito melhor do que esperávamos

O filme tem várias cenas genuinamente engraçadas.

Desde o momento completamente constrangedor da compra da pílula do dia seguinte até alguns dos encontros absolutamente desastrosos (o homem dos gatos ficará para sempre nas nossas memórias 😂).

É tudo na base de piadas simples, mas a verdade é que funcionam e acabam por transmitir o absurdo de cada encontro!

❤️ Leah & Mason

A verdade é que qualquer comédia romântica tem como foco o casal de protagonistas e neste filme a relação entre a Leah e o Mason cresce naturalmente. Não existe aquele amor instantâneo típico de algumas comédias românticas.

Na realidade, eles detestam-se profundamente durante o encontro. Mas os seus caminhos voltam a cruzar-se e inevitavelmente, surge uma amizade e uma enorme cumplicidade entre ambos.

E só muito mais tarde ambos percebem aquilo que o espectador já sabe há bastante tempo. Obviamente que a Leah demora mais tempo, porque insiste em negar o que sente por demasiado tempo... 🙄

Também gostámos muito da Bianca e do Steve, que acabam por funcionar quase como uma segunda família da Leah. Se bem que o destaque de todo este plano malévolo para trazer o amor à vida da Leah só pode ser atribuído à avó Gigi, obviamente.

🌼 A verdadeira mensagem do filme

Para nós, este acabou por ser muito mais um filme sobre crescimento pessoal do que propriamente sobre romance.

Os 40 encontros nunca foram realmente o objetivo da avó Gigi. Ela só queria que a neta voltasse a viver, que saísse da rotina e que corresse riscos. Que voltasse a acreditar que ainda existiam pessoas boas que valem a pena amar.

🌟 Elenco

A Bailee Madison é absolutamente adorável. Já gostávamos dela desde Engana-me Que Eu Gosto, mas aqui demonstra que consegue perfeitamente assumir um papel principal numa comédia romântica.

O Joel Courtney também resulta muito bem como Mason. Tem uma energia muito descontraída e simpática, que faz com que seja impossível não torcer por ele quando notamos que ele estava apaixonado pela Leah.

E depois há a Annie Potts, claro! 👑 A Gigi rouba praticamente todas as cenas onde entra.

É impossível não gostar dela!

Se procuram uma comédia romântica divertida para uma sexta-feira à noite, sim, sem dúvida! ❤️

Não é um filme que vá mudar o género.

Mas é daqueles que acabam e deixam um sorriso na cara. Às vezes é exatamente isso que precisamos.
