Reading Diary #4 | The Love Hypothesis

Hello, readers! 🤗 By this point, we've
realised that saying we're "enjoying" The Love Hypothesis
would be a massive understatement.
📖 Reading Progress
We're completely addicted to the drama!
Our original plan was to read a few chapters a day and take
our time working our way through the story. Since we're slower readers, we
didn't want to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves.
The reality? We're devouring chapters, yelling at fictional
characters and looking at each other every time something unexpected happens.
And chapters 10 through 17 gave us a lot to talk about. 👀
💕 Olive finally admits what
we all already knew
Let's start with the most important thing.
Olive finally admits that she's in love with Adam.
HALLELUJAH! 🙏🏻
After so many chapters where we, as readers, were basically
screaming at her to realise the obvious, we finally have confirmation.
And we particularly loved her conversation with Malcolm.
Malcolm is simply the sweetest. 🥹
He's that friend who seems to understand exactly what's going on, even when the
person involved is still trying to convince themselves that they don't feel
what they very obviously feel.
Olive admits that she's in love with Adam, that she's
undeniably physically attracted to him, but also that his absence is starting
to affect her much more than she'd like to admit.
The problem? Adam apparently hasn't received the memo yet. And
of course, he has absolutely no interest in her. (Or at least, that's what Olive thinks. 😂)
😂 The biggest misunderstanding
in the book so far
In the following chapter, Adam shows up right when Olive is
talking to Malcolm about being in love with someone.
And, of course, he hears just enough to come to the
completely wrong conclusion.
Because apparently Olive can't simply say, "Adam, I'm
in love with you", and solve the situation like a normal person.
Oh no! We have to suffer first, obviously. 🙃
Adam apparently assumes she's talking about Jeremy and all
we could think was:
ADAM. IT'S YOU. SHE'S TALKING ABOUT YOU!!!!!!
Meanwhile, we get to know Holden, Adam's longtime best
friend, a little better, and we quickly realise that he's another character
that's impossible not to love.
Dr. Rodriguez is officially approved by us. 🤍
There's something about his personality that immediately
gives off the vibe of someone who's easygoing, fun and genuinely cares about
his friends.
We also start noticing some interesting tension between
Holden and Tom.
At first, we weren't exactly sure what to make of it. Could
it be jealousy over the relationship they both have with Adam? A competition
for the title of best friend?
But we started getting... suspicious. 👀
🥤 Messages that couldn't
be more obvious!
Adam. My dear Adam!
Sending Olive a picture of that ridiculously sugary drink
you know she loves, asking if you can get it through airport security and then
saying:
"I wish you were here."
And expecting her to immediately realise that you're in love
with her, might be asking a little too much of Olive. 😂
It's impossible not to look at these two and think:
How can they be so incredibly intelligent professionally and
yet so absolutely useless when it comes to their own feelings?
The chemistry between them is becoming more and more
obvious, and we're simply sitting in the front row watching this romantic
disaster unfold. 🍿😂
🎤 Harvard, the conference
and an Olive who continues to surprise us
When we get to the conference, we once again understand why
Olive is such an easy character to admire.
She's young, but incredibly intelligent and capable, and
being invited to give a presentation at a scientific conference is a huge
achievement.
Her supervisor is genuinely proud of her and even gives her
one of our favourite lines so far:
"Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre
white man."
Honestly? We'd frame it or embroider it onto a T-shirt 🤭.
And Adam, being Adam, also offers to help her prepare her
presentation.
Because he can pretend this relationship is fake all he
wants, but we see you, Adam. 👀
🛏 Two Beds? Or a rom-com
moment?
When Olive realises she's been left without accommodation
for the conference, we already knew exactly where this was going. Adam offers
her his room, which, of course, has two beds.
TWO!
But of course, that didn't stop anything. 😏
😡 Tom. Just... Tom.
And then we get to the moment that genuinely made us
uncomfortable.
Up until this point, we actually quite liked Tom. He seemed
like an interesting, competent character with the potential to be a positive
presence in the story.
Well. We take back everything we said.
After Olive's presentation, Tom approaches her and makes a
move on her. We were right about there being a love triangle, but it definitely
isn't mutual.
When she rejects him, his personality completely changes.
And what follows is simply awful.
He attacks her work, dismisses her presentation and starts
implying that she only got the opportunity because she slept with Adam. And, of
course, that if she's "good" to him at Harvard, she'll get everything
she wants.
It was one of those moments when we genuinely wanted to jump
into the book and get Olive out of there.
It's not just the insult.
It's the way he tries to use a professional situation to
humiliate her and make her doubt herself.
And, even worse, it's clear that Olive was never really the
problem.
It's Adam.
There's an enormous amount of resentment and jealousy there,
and unfortunately, she's the one who ends up paying the price. Tom only wants
Olive because he thinks Adam has her.
Olive is completely terrified at the thought of telling
Adam. And it was probably one of the hardest parts of these chapters to read.
Because she did nothing wrong. She worked for it. She
deserved to be at that conference. She deserved that opportunity and that
recognition.
And yet, someone managed to make her feel like she had to
justify every achievement.
It was infuriating.
🤍 Adam, the person she
needed in that moment
And then Adam shows up, immediately realising that something
is wrong. Olive tries to explain what happened without telling him everything
and, once again, Adam does what he seems to do best: he stands by her.
Instead of insisting on going to the networking party, he
takes her out to dinner.
Because apparently Adam Carlsen can intimidate practically
the entire scientific community, but he can't stand by and watch Olive suffer. 🥹🥺
And honestly, that's exactly what she needed.
🍿 The most rom-com night
ever
After dinner, they end up back in the room.
Movie. Missing pyjamas. Adam lending her a T-shirt. Olive
appearing in his T-shirt.
And us:
The tension between these two was already reaching
completely ridiculous levels.
And then the kiss we had been waiting for finally happens.
After so many chapters of fake dating, tension, lingering
looks, being constantly close to each other and an absurd amount of denial…
Finally!
And let's just say that Chapter 16 is definitely the spicy
chapter. 👀🔥
We particularly loved it because, despite being quite an
intense scene, it still feels very much like them. Olive is still Olive, and
Adam is still saying completely ridiculous things whenever he loses his
composure. 🤭 Absolutely loved it!
💔 And then we get to
Chapter 17...
And the happiness lasts approximately five minutes, because
we finally start to realise what we'd already suspected: Adam might be heading
to Harvard.
And worse? He might end up working more closely with Tom.
Olive's reaction was probably exactly the same as ours. 😭😭😭
After everything that happened, after that moment between
them…
Now we have this?
And on top of that, she doesn't want to accept the
opportunity to work with Tom, while Adam seems increasingly likely to go to
Harvard.
And that thought Olive has about this possibly being their
last night together? 💔
She wants Adam to succeed and genuinely wants him to go to
Harvard and have the career he deserves. But at the same time, she's convinced
that this means losing him.
🥹 We're emotionally
invested
Olive and Adam have incredible chemistry, and we love that
their relationship has developed slowly rather than simply appearing out of
nowhere. It's not official yet, of course, but it's inevitable that they're
going to start dating... right?
We also really love the way the story combines the romance
with Olive's academic life. She doesn't exist simply to be "the girl who's
in love with Adam."
She's intelligent, ambitious and incredibly dedicated to her
work.
And that's precisely why the situation with Tom made us so
angry.
Right now, we want three things:
- For
Olive to finally realise that Adam is completely in love with her.
- For
Adam to realise that Olive is completely in love with him.
- For
Tom to jump off a cliff. Seems reasonable to us. 😂🤷🏻♂️

Estamos completamente viciados no drama!
A ideia inicial era lermos alguns capítulos por dia e irmos avançando calmamente pela história. Como somos leitores mais lentos, não quisemos estar a aumentar a pressão desnecessariamente.
A realidade? Estamos a devorar capítulos, a gritar com personagens fictícias e a olhar um para o outro sempre que acontece alguma coisa inesperada.
E os capítulos 10 a 17 deram-nos muita coisa para discutir. 👀
💕 A Olive finalmente admite aquilo que todos nós já sabíamos
Vamos começar pelo mais importante.
A Olive finalmente admite que está apaixonada pelo Adam.
ALELUIA! 🙏🏻
Depois de tantos capítulos em que nós, leitores, já estávamos basicamente aos gritos para ela perceber o óbvio, finalmente temos a confirmação.
E adorámos particularmente a conversa dela com o Malcolm.
O Malcolm é simplesmente um amor. 🥹 É aquele amigo que parece perceber exatamente o que se está a passar, mesmo quando a própria pessoa envolvida ainda está a tentar convencer-se de que não sente aquilo que claramente sente.
A Olive admite que está apaixonada pelo Adam, que sente uma atração física muito óbvia por ele, mas também que a ausência dele começa a afetá-la muito mais do que gostaria de admitir.
O problema? O Adam aparentemente ainda não recebeu o memorando. E claro, não tem qualquer interesse nela. (Ou pelo menos é isso que a Olive pensa. 😂)
😂 O maior mal-entendido do livro até agora
No capítulo seguinte, o Adam aparece precisamente quando a Olive está a falar com o Malcolm sobre estar apaixonada por alguém.
E, claro, ele ouve apenas o suficiente para tirar a conclusão errada.
Porque aparentemente a Olive não pode simplesmente dizer “Adam, estou apaixonada por ti” e resolver a situação como uma pessoa normal.
Oh não! Temos de sofrer primeiro, claro. 🙃
O Adam aparentemente assume que ela está a falar do Jeremy e nós só conseguimos pensar:
ADAM. ÉS TU. ELA ESTÁ A FALAR DE TI!!!!!!
Entretanto, conhecemos melhor o Holden, o melhor amigo de longa data do Adam, e rapidamente percebemos que ele é outra personagem impossível de não adorar.
Dr. Rodriguez, está oficialmente aprovado por nós. 🤍
Há qualquer coisa na personalidade dele que transmite imediatamente aquela sensação de pessoa confortável, divertida e genuinamente preocupada com os amigos.
E também começamos a perceber que existe alguma tensão interessante entre o Holden e o Tom.
Na altura ainda não sabíamos exatamente o que pensar. Seriam ciúmes da relação que ambos têm com o Adam? Uma competição pelo posto de melhor amigo?
Mas começámos a ficar… com a pulga atrás da orelha.
🥤 Mensagens mais do que óbvias!
Adam. Meu querido Adam!
Mandar uma fotografia daquela bebida cheia de açúcar que sabes que a Olive adora, perguntar se consegues fazê-la passar pelo avião e depois dizer:
“Quem me dera que estivesses aqui.”
E esperar que ela perceba imediatamente que estás apaixonado por ela, seria talvez pedir demasiado à Olive. 😂
É impossível não olhar para estes dois e pensar:
Como é que conseguem ser tão inteligentes profissionalmente e tão absolutamente inúteis quando o assunto são os próprios sentimentos?
A química entre eles está cada vez mais evidente e nós estamos simplesmente a assistir ao desastre amoroso na primeira fila. 🍿😂
🎤 Harvard, a conferência e uma Olive que continua a surpreender-nos
Quando chegamos à conferência, percebemos mais uma vez porque é que a Olive é uma personagem tão fácil de admirar.
Ela é jovem, mas extremamente inteligente e competente, e ser convidada para dar uma palestra numa conferência científica é uma conquista enorme.
A responsável dela está genuinamente orgulhosa e ainda lhe deixa uma das frases que mais gostámos até agora:
“Age com a confiança de um homem branco medíocre.”
Honestamente? Emoldurávamos ou bordavamos numa t-shirt 🤭.
E o Adam, sendo Adam, também se oferece para ajudá-la a preparar a apresentação.
Porque ele pode fingir que esta relação é falsa o quanto quiser, mas nós estamos a ver-te, Adam. 👀
🛏 Duas camas? Ou momento rom-com?
Quando a Olive percebe que ficou sem alojamento para a conferência, nós já sabíamos exatamente para onde isto ia. O Adam oferece-lhe o quarto, que claro tem duas camas.
DUAS!
Mas claro que isso não impediu nada 😏.
😡 Tom. Simplesmente Tom.
E depois chegamos ao momento que nos deixou genuinamente desconfortáveis.
Até aqui, gostávamos bastante do Tom. Parecia uma personagem interessante, competente e com potencial para ser uma presença positiva na história.
Pois. Retiramos tudo o que dissemos.
Depois da apresentação da Olive, o Tom aproxima-se dela e tenta fazer-se a ela. Acertamos na parte de que haveria um triângulo, mas não é recíproco.
Quando ela o rejeita, a personalidade dele muda completamente. E aquilo que se segue é simplesmente horrível.
Ele ataca o trabalho dela, desvaloriza a apresentação e começa a insinuar que ela só conseguiu aquela oportunidade, porque dormiu com o Adam. E claro, que se ela for "boa" para ele em Harvard, vai ter tudo o que deseja.
Foi um daqueles momentos em que tivemos mesmo vontade de entrar no livro e tirar a Olive dali.
Não é apenas o insulto.
É a forma como ele tenta usar uma situação profissional para humilhá-la e fazer com que ela duvide de si própria.
E, pior ainda, percebe-se que o problema dele nunca foi realmente a Olive.
É o Adam.
Há ali uma quantidade enorme de ressentimento e ciúme, e infelizmente quem acaba por pagar é ela. O Tom só a quer por pensar que o Adam a tem.
A Olive fica completamente aterrorizada com a possibilidade de contar ao Adam. E foi provavelmente uma das partes mais difíceis de ler destes capítulos.
Porque ela não fez nada de errado. Ela trabalhou. Ela mereceu estar naquela conferência. Ela mereceu aquela oportunidadee reconhecimento .
E, ainda assim, alguém conseguiu fazê-la sentir que tinha de justificar cada conquista.
Foi revoltante.
🤍 Adam, a pessoa que ela precisava naquele momento
E então aparece o Adam que percebe imediatamente que alguma coisa está errada. A Olive tenta explicar o que aconteceu sem lhe contar tudo e, mais uma vez, o Adam faz aquilo que parece fazer melhor: fica do lado dela.
Em vez de insistir na festa de networking, leva-a a jantar.
Porque, aparentemente, o Adam Carlsen pode ser intimidante para praticamente toda a comunidade científica, mas não consegue deixar a Olive a sofrer. 🥹🥺
E, sinceramente, foi exatamente aquilo que ela precisava.
🍿 A noite mais rom-com possível
Depois do jantar, acabam no quarto.
Filme. Pijama desaparecido. O Adam a emprestar-lhe uma T-shirt. A Olive a aparecer com a T-shirt dele.
E nós:
A tensão entre estes dois já estava a atingir níveis completamente ridículos.
E depois finalmente acontece o beijo que tanto esperávamos.
Depois de tantos capítulos de fake dating, tensão, olhares, proximidade e uma quantidade absurda de negação…
Finalmente!
E vamos apenas dizer que o capítulo 16 é, definitivamente, o capítulo spicy. 👀🔥
Gostámos particularmente, porque, apesar de ser uma cena bastante intensa, continua a parecer muito deles. A Olive continua a ser a Olive, o Adam continua a dizer coisas completamente absurdas quando perde a compostura 🤭. Muito bom!
💔 E então chegamos ao capítulo 17...
E a felicidade dura aproximadamente cinco minutos, porque começamos finalmente a perceber aquilo que já suspeitávamos: o Adam pode estar a caminho de Harvard.
E pior? Ele poderá estar a trabalhar mais próximo do Tom.
A reação da Olive foi provavelmente a nossa também. 😭😭😭
Depois de tudo o que aconteceu, depois daquele momento entre eles…
Agora temos isto?
E ainda por cima ela não quer aceitar a oportunidade de trabalhar com o Tom, enquanto o Adam parece cada vez mais próximo de ir para Harvard.
E aquela reflexão da Olive sobre aquela poder ser a última noite deles juntos? 💔
Ela quer que o Adam tenha sucesso e quer genuinamente que ele vá para Harvard e tenha a carreira que merece. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, está convencida de que isso significa perdê-lo.
🥹 Estamos emocionalmente investidos
A Olive e o Adam têm uma química incrível e adoramos que a relação tenha evoluído lentamente, em vez de aparecer simplesmente do nada. Ainda não é oficial, claro, mas é inevitável que comecem a namorar... certo?
Também gostamos muito da forma como a história mistura o romance com a vida académica da Olive. Ela não existe apenas para ser “a rapariga que está apaixonada pelo Adam”.
Ela é inteligente, ambiciosa e extremamente dedicada ao trabalho.
E é precisamente por isso que a situação com o Tom nos deixou tão irritados.
Neste momento, queremos três coisas:
- Que a Olive perceba finalmente que o Adam está completamente apaixonado por ela.
- Que o Adam perceba que a Olive está completamente apaixonada por ele.
- Que o Tom salte de um penhasco. Parece-nos razoável. 😂🤷🏻♂️
⭐ Avaliação atual: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (completamente rendidos)
💭 Teoria atual: não temos nenhuma por agora. Estamos completamente às escuras.
O que será que os próximos capítulos nos reservam?
