Reading Diary: A very messy end to our summer reading

We may have slightly lost control of our TBR.

Actually… “slightly” might be an understatement.

At the moment, we are reading multiple books at the same time, which means our reading life has become a strange combination of summer romance, college chaos, emotional devastation and Panem trauma. And somehow, we are enjoying every second of it.

So, welcome to our latest Reading Diary: A very messy end to our summer reading.

     🌞 The Last Sunrise by Anna Todd

We are currently on chapter 15, and this has been our little piece of summer.

The story is sweet, easy to read, but with a little drama to make it interesting and very much what we needed for these last days of August. There is romance, there is chemistry, and, because this is Anna Todd, we are already expecting our fair share of drama.

We wouldn’t necessarily say we have a favourite character yet, but we’re enjoying the romance and, most importantly, the atmosphere. There is something about reading a summery romance while the weather outside is already threatening to become autumnal that makes us want to hold on to summer for just a little longer.

And honestly? We’re here for it!

     🏒The Mistake by Elle Kennedy

Then there is The Mistake, which has been providing a very different kind of entertainment.

We’re still near the beginning, but Logan is already proving to be… Logan. Watching him try to move on from Hannah, while navigating his “relationship” with Grace, has given us some genuinely funny and, occasionally, awkward moments. Grace isn’t exactly the most confident person in the room, which makes some of their interactions even more entertaining.

We’re still figuring out exactly where this story is going, but we’re enjoying the college-romance chaos so far.

     🔥 Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

And then there’s a book that reminds us readers that apparently we enjoy suffering. I’m currently well into the arena, and Sunrise on the Reaping has once again reminded me why Suzanne Collins is so good at making us care deeply about characters while knowing that absolutely nothing is safe. Reading The Hunger Games now, as an adult, feels completely different from reading it as a teenager. The brutality of putting children into an arena is somehow even harder to process when you’re old enough to fully understand the situation and the horror of the concept.

There have been moments of friendship, humour and hope, but they only make the darker moments hurt more.

     🏹 Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Meanwhile, André is continuing with Catching Fire and is having a very different experience.

Having only read the first book and seen small parts of the films, he’s starting to understand the story and relating it to events in our world. And Darius fate… 😥

It’s been one of those reading experiences where the story keeps on revealing new layers around the politics, rebellion and cruelty.

📚 So… how are we doing?

Well… not particularly well 😅. Are we probably going to add another one before finishing these? Still to be decided.

But, isn’t this the fun of reading together?

Sometimes our reading is very organized, there is a carefully planned TBR and a more ‘sensible’ number of books on the go.

And sometimes you’re finishing summer with four books between the two of you 🤭.

Podemos ter perdido ligeiramente o controlo da nossa TBR.

Na verdade… dizer “ligeiramente” talvez seja um eufemismo.

Neste momento, estamos a ler vários livros ao mesmo tempo, o que significa que a nossa vida de leitores se transformou numa estranha combinação de romance de verão, caos universitário, devastação emocional e trauma de Panem. E, de alguma forma, estamos a aproveitar cada segundo.

Por isso, sejam bem-vindos ao nosso mais recente Diário de Leitura: Um final de verão muito caótico.

     🌞 O Último Nascer do Sol da Anna Todd

Estamos atualmente no capítulo 15 e este livro tem sido o nosso pequeno pedaço de verão. A história é querida e fácil de ler, mas tem aquele bocadinho de drama que a torna interessante, exatamente aquilo de que precisávamos para estes últimos dias de agosto. Há romance, há química e, sendo este um livro da Anna Todd, já estamos à espera da nossa dose generosa de drama.

Ainda não diríamos que temos uma personagem favorita, mas estamos a gostar do romance e, acima de tudo, da atmosfera. Há qualquer coisa de especial em ler um romance de verão enquanto o tempo lá fora já ameaça transformar-se em outono, que nos faz querer agarrar-nos ao verão só mais um bocadinho.

E, sinceramente? Estamos a adorar cada segundo!

     🏒 O Erro da Elle Kennedy

Depois temos O Erro, que nos tem proporcionado um tipo de sorrisos bastante diferentes.

Ainda estamos relativamente no início, mas o Logan já está a provar ser… bem, o Logan.

Vê-lo tentar seguir em frente depois da Hannah, enquanto lida com a sua “relação” com a Grace, tem-nos proporcionado momentos genuinamente engraçados e, ocasionalmente, bastante constrangedores. A Grace não é propriamente a pessoa mais confiante do mundo, o que torna algumas das interações entre os dois ainda mais divertidas.

Ainda estamos a tentar perceber exatamente para onde esta história nos vai levar, mas, até agora, estamos a gostar bastante deste caos de romance universitário.

     🔥 Amanhecer na Ceifa da Suzanne Collins

E depois temos aquele livro que nos lembra que, aparentemente, nós gostamos mesmo de sofrer.

Estou atualmente bastante avançada na arena e Amanhecer na Ceifa voltou a lembrar-me porque é que a Suzanne Collins é tão boa a fazer-nos criar uma ligação profunda com as personagens, ao mesmo tempo que sabemos que, naquele mundo, absolutamente ninguém está a salvo.

Ler Os Jogos da Fome agora, enquanto adulta, é uma experiência completamente diferente de quando o li na adolescência. A brutalidade de colocar crianças numa arena é, de alguma forma, ainda mais difícil de processar quando temos idade suficiente para compreender verdadeiramente a situação e o horror por detrás de todo o conceito.

Houve momentos de amizade, humor e esperança, mas acabam apenas por tornar os momentos mais sombrios ainda mais dolorosos.

     🏹 Em Chamas da Suzanne Collins

Entretanto, o André continua a sua leitura com Em Chamas e está a ter uma experiência bastante diferente.

Tendo lido apenas o primeiro livro e visto pequenas partes dos filmes, está agora a começar a compreender melhor a história e a relacioná-la com acontecimentos do nosso próprio mundo. E o destino do Darius… 😥

Tem sido uma daquelas experiências de leitura em que a história continua a revelar novas camadas relacionadas com a política, rebelião e crueldade.

📚 Então… como estamos?

Bom… não particularmente bem 😅.

É provável que ainda adicionemos outro livro antes de terminarmos estes? Ainda está por decidir.

Mas não é esta uma das partes mais divertidas de ler em conjunto?

Às vezes, a nossa leitura é muito organizada, temos uma TBR cuidadosamente planeada e uma quantidade mais “sensata” de livros em andamento. E, por outras, damos por nós a terminar o verão com quatro livros entre os dois 🤭.
