Movie Review: The Last Sunrise

After reading The Last Sunrise by Anna Todd earlier this year, we were naturally curious to see how the story would translate to the screen. And now that we’ve finally watched the movie, we have some thoughts. 🤔

Overall, The Last Sunrise was entertaining. It’s an easy, summery watch with beautiful scenery, a fun soundtrack and some performances we really enjoyed. But while we had a good time watching it, we also felt that something was missing, especially towards the end.

🌴 Mallorca steals the show

Let’s start with the obvious: Mallorca is absolutely gorgeous as a background to the story.

The scenery throughout the movie is stunning, and the whole film has that dreamy Mediterranean summer atmosphere that makes you want to book a flight immediately. 🍹🌊

The beaches, the streets, the markets, the sea, the sunshine… the vibes are immaculate!

If there’s one thing the movie gets completely right, it’s the feeling of being somewhere beautiful, warm and far away from everyday life.

🎶 The soundtrack

We also really enjoyed the soundtrack.

It feels modern, fun and very summery, and it fits the atmosphere of the movie really well. It adds to that feeling of being on holiday and makes the lighter moments even more enjoyable.

🎭 The cast

When it comes to the main performances, we felt that Maia Reficco, who plays Ry, stood out slightly more for us than Fernando Lindez as Julián.

That said, one of the performances we unexpectedly enjoyed the most was Chloé Sweetlove as Amara. She brought such a fun and charming energy to the character, and every time she appeared, she added a little something extra to the scene.

Honestly, we’d love to see her in more projects. She has such a fun screen presence that we could even imagine her in something completely different, maybe an urban fantasy project. 

Then there’s Eva Longoria. She is, quite simply, a breath of fresh air in this movie. It's Eva Longoria for god's sake. Come on!

We loved the power and vulnerability she brought to the movie, and we especially enjoyed her relationship with Mateo, played by Andrés Velencoso. Their chemistry was lovely, and honestly, we wish that relationship had been explored a little more, because there was clearly something interesting there. (And, dare we say, even though quite sublte, their chemistry was better than the main couple. 👀)

📖 Some changes didn't quite work for us

This is probably where the movie lost us a little.

Having read the book, we noticed some changes to the story that didn’t always feel necessary or particularly effective.

The whole storyline involving Carlos (confirma se é é esse o nome), for example, felt like unnecessary drama to us. Instead of adding something particularly meaningful to the story, it sometimes felt like another obstacle that had been added simply to create more conflict. 

It also made us question some of Julián’s behaviour more than we probably would have otherwise. It was just too much.

💔 The final act

This was probably our biggest issue with the movie.

The crisis that eventually leads Ry to the hospital is such an important moment in the story, especially because of what it might lead to in case they choose treatment. Not gonna lie, we were expecting this part of the story to carry a lot more emotional weight.

Instead, everything felt very rushed. The final part of the movie moves so quickly that we didn’t have enough time to process what was happening or really connect with the emotional consequences of the characters choices. And because of that, the ending didn’t feel quite as satisfying or as coherent with the rest of the story as we had hoped.

It wasn’t necessarily that we disliked where the story went. It was more how quickly it got us there.

We wanted more time with the characters, more emotional build-up and, honestly, a little more space for the ending to breathe.

☀️ Overall thoughts

At the end of the day, The Last Sunrise is one of those movies you can happily watch on a summer afternoon or evening.

It’s beautiful, romantic, entertaining and has some genuinely lovely moments. Mallorca is stunning, the soundtrack fits the atmosphere perfectly, and there are performances we really enjoyed.

But for us, the story needed more. Some of the changes from the book didn’t quite work, some of the added drama felt unnecessary, and the final act was simply too rushed for us to get the emotional payoff we were hoping for.

So, just like the book, we’re giving The Last Sunrise movie ⭐️ 3.5/5 stars.

A cute summer watch that entertained us, but left us wishing there had been just a little more care adapting the book.

Depois de termos lido O Último Nascer do Sol da Anna Todd, no início deste ano, ficámos naturalmente curiosos para ver como é que a história iria resultar no grande ecrã. E agora que finalmente vimos o filme, temos algumas coisas a dizer. 🤔

No geral, O Último Nascer do Sol foi divertido. É um filme leve, perfeito para o verão, com paisagens lindíssimas, uma banda sonora divertida e algumas interpretações de que gostámos bastante. Mas, apesar de nos termos divertido a vê-lo, também sentimos que faltou qualquer coisa, especialmente na parte final.

 

🌴 Maiorca rouba o protagonismo

Comecemos pelo óbvio: Maiorca é absolutamente deslumbrante como cenário para esta história.

As paisagens ao longo do filme são incríveis e todo o filme transmite aquela atmosfera de verão mediterrânico de sonho, que nos faz querer marcar imediatamente um voo. 🍹🌊

As praias, as ruas, os mercados, o mar, o sol… as vibes são perfeitas!

Se há uma coisa que o filme consegue transmitir na perfeição, é a sensação de estar num lugar bonito, quente e longe da rotina do dia a dia.

 

🎶 A banda sonora

Também gostámos bastante da banda sonora.

É moderna, divertida e muito de verão, e combina muito bem com a atmosfera do filme. Contribui para aquela sensação de estarmos de férias e torna os momentos mais leves ainda mais agradáveis.

 

🎭 O elenco

No que toca às interpretações principais, sentimos que a Maia Reficco, que interpreta a Ry, se destacou um pouco mais para nós do que o Fernando Lindez, no papel de Julián.

Dito isto, uma das interpretações de que gostámos mais inesperadamente foi a da Chloé Sweetlove, que interpreta a Amara. Trouxe uma energia tão divertida e cativante à personagem e, sempre que aparecia, acrescentava algo de especial à cena.

Sinceramente, gostávamos muito de a ver em mais projetos. Tem uma presença em ecrã tão divertida, que conseguimos imaginá-la perfeitamente num projeto completamente diferente, talvez numa fantasia urbana.

Depois temos a Eva Longoria. Ela é, muito simplesmente, um sopro de ar fresco neste filme. É a Eva Longoria, por amor de Deus. Vá lá! 😂

Adorámos a força e a vulnerabilidade que trouxe ao filme e gostámos especialmente da relação que desenvolveu com o Mateo, interpretado pelo Andrés Velencoso. A química entre os dois era ótima e, sinceramente, gostávamos que essa relação tivesse sido mais explorada, porque havia claramente algo interessante ali. (E, arriscamo-nos a dizer que, apesar de bastante subtil, a química entre eles era melhor do que a do casal principal. 👀)

 

📖 Algumas mudanças não funcionaram muito bem para nós

É provavelmente aqui que o filme nos começou a perder um pouco.

Tendo lido o livro, reparámos em algumas mudanças na história que nem sempre nos pareceram necessárias ou particularmente eficazes.

Toda a história envolvendo o Carlos, por exemplo, pareceu-nos um drama desnecessário. Em vez de acrescentar algo particularmente significativo à história, por vezes pareceu-nos apenas mais um obstáculo introduzido para criar conflito.

Também nos fez questionar alguns dos comportamentos de Julián mais do que provavelmente teríamos feito de outra forma. Foi simplesmente demais.

 

💔 A parte final

Este foi provavelmente o nosso maior problema com o filme.

A crise que acaba por levar a Ry ao hospital é um momento extremamente importante na história, especialmente tendo em conta aquilo que poderá acontecer caso decidam avançar com o tratamento. Não vamos mentir, esperávamos que esta parte da história tivesse muito mais peso emocional.

 

Em vez disso, pareceu-nos tudo demasiado apressado. A parte final do filme avança tão rapidamente que não tivemos tempo suficiente para processar o que estava a acontecer ou para nos ligarmos verdadeiramente às consequências emocionais das escolhas das personagens. E, por causa disso, o final não nos pareceu tão satisfatório ou tão coerente com o resto da história, como esperávamos.

Não é necessariamente que não tenhamos gostado do rumo que a história tomou. Foi mais a forma demasiado rápida como chegámos lá.

Queríamos passar mais tempo com as personagens, ter uma construção emocional maior e, sinceramente, um pouco mais de espaço para o final respirar.

 

☀️ Considerações finais

No final de contas, O Último Nascer do Sol é daqueles filmes que podemos perfeitamente ver numa tarde ou noite de verão.

É bonito, romântico, divertido e tem alguns momentos genuinamente muito bons. Maiorca é deslumbrante, a banda sonora combina na perfeição com a atmosfera e há algumas interpretações de que gostámos mesmo muito.

 

Mas, para nós, a história precisava de mais. Algumas das mudanças em relação ao livro não funcionaram muito bem, parte do drama acrescentado pareceu-nos desnecessário e a parte final foi simplesmente demasiado apressada, para conseguirmos ter o impacto emocional que esperávamos.

 

Por isso, tal como fizemos com o livro, damos ao filme O Último Nascer do Sol ⭐️ 3,5/5 estrelas.

Um filme de verão querido e divertido que nos entreteve, mas que nos deixou a desejar que tivesse existido um pouco mais de cuidado na adaptação do livro.
