The Love Hypothesis Movie Review

(English)

Hello dear readers! ๐Ÿค— Welcome to another review! It's officially friday, our work day as ended and we are finally ready to discuss The Love Hypothesis!

The movie premiered on September 23rd, but we deliberately waited until the weekend to watch it, because... well, after work we just couldn't push ourselves to stay up later. Plus, we really wanted to be present and really enjoy it without worries in our mind.

Honestly, we think that worked in our favour because, when something we have been excited about for months finally comes out, it is very easy to let all that excitement influence the way we feel about it without as much consideration.

Waiting a few days gave us a little bit of distance before forming an opinion so it was probably the right call.

And our final verdict? A solid ⭐️ 4/5. It could have been better, but overall it works!

The casting

One of the things we were most curious about was the casting, and overall, we were really happy with the choices.

Lili Reinhart feels very much like the quirky Olive we were hoping to see. She has that sweet, slightly chaotic energy that works really well for the character, and we thought she captured Olive's personality surprisingly well.

Tom Bateman as Adam was another casting choice we really liked. We know, we know... Adam Driver would be the way to go for us book readers. However, Tom Bateman definitely has the "whole slightly intimidating and ridiculously attractive" vibe.

There were also moments when his Adam felt almost too socially awkward and rigid, but, honestly, that kind of works for the character, don't you think?

Rachel Marsh, as Anh was probably one of the biggest surprises for us. We really liked the casting and the character actually felt more interesting and developed in the film than we expected. Her presence gives some of those scenes a little more depth, and we were very happy with how she was handled.

Some changes worked better than others

As bookworms, we understand that adaptations have to change a couple of things every now and then.

A book simply has more room to develop characters, relationships and subplots. So, unless you want a very long movie or turn the story into a tv show, some things have to be cut, combined or changed.

And some of the changes here worked just fine for us. Others not so much.

One of the changes we really disliked was the way Malcolm treats Olive after Adam kicks him out of the research team. He was always the sweet and understanding friend and seeing him lash out at her that way was so out of character. It was malicious and meant to hurt.

Speaking of Malcom, we also missed is crush/boyfriend Holden Rodriguez. He may not be the main character, but he plays an important role in the book, particularly when it comes to making Olive suspicious of Tom and ensuring that Adam always has a true friend to count on. His absence meant that some of that development had to be handled differently in the film.

The relationship between Olive and Ahn also felt much more solid in the movie. It seemed like a much more established and genuine friendship, which actually helped us understand some of Olive's actions and motivations.

The scenes we really missed

There were a few moments from the book that we really wish had made it into the movie.

One of them is the lecture scene where Olive ends up sitting on Adam's lap, especially because of Anh watching them and putting even more pressure on the situation. It is such a ridiculous and awkward moment in the book, and we were genuinely sad not to see it.

But the biggest missed opportunity for us was the conversation between Olive and Tom and the aftermath with Adam's reaction to it. Why did they remove it? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍♀️

In the book, the entire situation is explosive and nuts. It happens during a Harvard dinner/reunion, with other people around, and Adam's reaction is one of those moments where everything completely blows up in public.

The film changes the circumstances, and because Tom doesn't make the same horrible proposition in quite the same way, Olive never "accidentally" records the conversation to use as evidence. And we really wish she had.

Imagine Tom's face if he realised that everything he had just said was recorded and that Olive could end is carrer with a simple snap of her fingers...

It would have completely changed the dynamic. Instead of becoming a situation where it is basically Olive's word against his, she would have had actual proof. And Adam's reaction could have been even more intense if he knew exactly what had been said.

Adam and Olive first contact (no pun intended)

We also thought the film moved a little too quickly when it came to Olive figuring out who the mysterious man from the bathroom scene was. It was cute, but it felt slightly rushed and made us miss on the whole plot of Holden revealing that Adam had been in love with Olive since that day.

Without that element, the relationship loses a little bit of the slow-burn payoff that made it so satisfying for us.

Overall

Despite all of this, we had a lot of fun watching The Love Hypothesis.

We thought the casting worked really well, the chemistry between the characters was enjoyable, and the film captured a lot of the light, fun and romantic atmosphere that made the book so easy to love.

Still, there were enough changes, enough missing moments and characters for us to take the rating down a little.

Overall, it is a fun and entertaining adaptation that works well as a movie in its own right.

And honestly, adapting a book is hard and depends on so many factors. Not everything can be adapted with such perfectionism as Lord of The Rings, for example.

There will always be things that have to be sacrificed when you turn hundreds of pages into a couple of hours. Sometimes a TV show has more space to preserve those details, but even then, success doesn't necessarily mean longevity. We've seen shows like Shadow and Bone receive plenty of love for their casting and adaptations and still be cancelled. My Lady Jane is another example of a show we absolutely loved, despite never having read the book.

Movies, at least, have the advantage of giving us a beginning, middle and end.

So while The Love Hypothesis isn't a perfect adaptation for us, it was still a really enjoyable watch and we're very glad we finally got to see Olive and Adam on screen.

⭐️ 4/5

Have you watched The Love Hypothesis yet? And, if you've read the book, which change did you bother you the most?

(Portuguรชs)

Olรก, queridos leitores!

Nรณs sabemos, nรณs sabemos… para nรณs, leitores do livro, o Adam Driver seria o caminho a seguir.

Algumas mudanรงas funcionaram melhor do que outras

Por falar no Malcolm, tambรฉm sentimos falta do crush/namorado dele, Holden Rodriguez.

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍♀️

No livro, toda a situaรงรฃo รฉ explosiva e completamente louca.

No geral

Apesar de tudo isto, divertimo-nos imenso a ver A Hipรณtese do Amor.

⭐️ 4/5

Jรก viram A Hipรณtese do Amor?
