Book recommendation: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

    Hi everyone! Bia here! Today, I bring you a recommendation! 😉

    There is no denying the impact of The Hunger Games trilogy on YA literature. The idea of a futuristic society that replaced the USA with Panem, a country devided in several districts all ruled by the Capitol was interesting to say the least 😶. But nothing could beat the idea that this system makes this type of control possible by hosting The Hunger Games every year, a bloody event where each district must send a boy and a girl between the age of 12 to 18 to fight to death in an arena 😱. The last tribute standing, is considered a victor and becomes rich 💰 beyond his dreams while also allowing their disctrict to receive a portions of food every month for a year.

    If you haven't read the trilogy, there is no better moment to start. But, I would highly advice you to pick up The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes after 👌🏻. The story revolves around the young Coriolanus Snow, who one day will become the rutheless President Snow. The events focus on his time as a mentor during the Hunger Games. The Snow family was notorious but lost its fortune during the war. The name Snow is still a sign of respect among some people but Coriolanus is willing to do anything in order to ensure his tribute wins the games. After he is paired with the girl from District 12, there is little hope to Coriolanus since she is tiny and looks like it won't last long. But is she that harmless? 🤔

    The book is well written and you can see how much work Suzanne Collins put into it. The development of our main character story is set in the post-war time, with the development of the games still being in process and many of the ideas that we know from the trilogy were actually developed around that time. We can also see the evolution of Coriolanus and some of the traits that we later associate with the antagonist in the trilogy.

    I also have to say that this is probably not a book for everyone but I would highy recommend for you to pick it up not only beacause we can kind of see the beginning of a vilain origin story but we also get to have a look at the Capitol and their reaction to the war and to the games.

    I have to admit that there were moment when I had to remind myself who Coriolanus will become because I would feel sympathetic towards him despite knowing what he would do in the future. And this type of feeling when reading, makes the words come to life in a complete different way They put you in a spot where you even question your own mind and emotions. Just give it a try. Trust me!

    Last but not least, I would like to thank my friend Marry for gifting me this book last Christmas. I am so glad I got it out of my TBR!

    É impossível negar o impacto que a trilogia Os Jogos da Fome teve na literatura juvenil. A ideia de uma sociedade futurista que substituiu os EUA com Panem, um país dividido em diversos distritos, todos eles governados pelo Capitólio era bastante interessante 😶. Mas nada pode bater a ideia de que este tipo de controlo exercido pelo sistema só é possível, realizando anualmente os Jogos da Fome, um evento sangrento em que cada um dos distritos envia um rapaz e uma rapariga entre os 12 e os 18 para lutar até à morte numa arena 😱. O último tributo que sobreviva é considerado o vencedor e é-lhe oferecida riqueza 💰 para além dos seus sonhos e porções mensais de comida para o seu distrito durante o próximo ano.

    Se ainda não leram a trilogia, não existe melhor momento para começar. Mas recomendo vivamente que peguem n'A Balada dos Pássaros e das Serpentes depois 👌🏻. A história foca-se no jovem Coriolanus Snow, que um dia irá tornar-se o implacável Presidente Snow. Os eventos falam-nos sobre o tempo dele enquanto mentor dos Jogos da Fome. A familia Snow era altamente conceituada mas perdeu toda a sua fortuna durante a guerra. O nome Snow ainda é digno de algum respeito entre alguns membros da sociedade mas Coriolanus está disposto a qualquer coisa para assegurar que a sua tributo ganha os jogos. Depois de lhe ser atribuída a rapariga do Distrito 12, parece haver pouca esperança para Coriolanus uma vez que ela é bastante pequena e não parece que vá aguentar muito. Mas será ela assim tão inofensiva quanto parece? 🤔

    O livro está muito bem escrito e é possível ver a dedicação da Suzzane Collins. O desenvolvimento da história da nossa personagem principal ocorre durante o período pós guerra, com o desenvolvimento dos jogos ainda a meio do processo e com muitas ideias que conhecemos da trilogia a serem desenvolvidas neste período de tempo. Também conseguimos observar a evolução do Coriolanus e alguns dos traços que mais tarde associamos ao antagonista da trilogia.

    Pessoalmente também tenho de dizer que este livro não é para toda a gente mas recomendo vivamente que peguem nele, não apenas porque vemos o inicio de uma história de origem de um vilão mas temos também a possibilidade de observar a reação do Capitólio à guerra e aos jogos.    

    Tenho de admitir que houveram momentos em que tive de lembrar a mim mesma em quem o Coriolanus se irá tornar porque sentia simpatia para com ele apesar de saber quais seriam os atos dele no futuro. E este tipo de sentimento enquanto lemos, faz as palavras tornarem-se mais vivas do que nunca. Põem-nos numa situação em que questionamos a nossa própria mente e emoções. Experimentem o livro. Confiem em mim!
