🐠 Book Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty 🐠

    Hello, everyone!🤗 Summer has come to an end, but we still have a taste of the summer vacations to share with you☀️. A review on Jenny Han's The Summer trilogy first book, The Summer I Turned Pretty. Don't forget, there are spoilers ahead, so if you're thinking of reading the trilogy, as much as we love having you here, close this post and come back later.  

Summary

    As we've already said, this is the first book in a trilogy and it's an ideal read for summer and for feeling all the emotions of a simple teenage romance. In this story, our protagonist is Isabel Conklin, affectionately known as Belly, a girl who says that her whole life can be measured in summers. And we get confirmation of this as she tells us how her current summer is going and the events that have marked her in summers past. What makes summer really important for Belly are the vacation at the Fisher beach house, especially the brothers Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly's mum and the Fisher brothers' mum are very close friends and their children grew up together. Conrad and Jeremiah are usually closer to Belly's brother Steven, but this year she hopes it will be different.

    Belly has always had the biggest crush on Conrad, but he never seemed to reciprocate her feelings. Now she's about to turn 16 and hopes that this is the perfect moment for her and Conrad to have a chance together. With a summer full of anger between the two and Conrad ignoring Belly or scolding her, Jeremiah presents himself as her shoulder to lean on and the two become even closer.

    While Conrad takes a much more defensive and negative stance, Jeremiah acts as his complete opposite, being friendly and extremely helpful to everyone. Over time, we realise that something isn't right with Susannah, the boys' mother, until finally, Belly discovers the truth. Susannah is ill again and this time the cancer is more aggressive and there is very little chance of her getting better. The Fisher boys know this and so does Belly's mum. She was the only one who didn't know. With this, we finally understand the boys' behaviour and realise how they all deal with what lies ahead in different ways.

Our opinion

    So let's get to our opinions, shall we?😌 From our perspective, the book is fun and easy to read. The story is interesting and simple, but it works because the alternating perspectives keep us interested in understanding the history that leads to certain situations and attitudes on the part of our characters. We've heard a lot of opinions about Belly spending a lot of time complaining about little things and being annoying, but let's face it, she's 16 😅. When have we not been annoying about rubbish in our teens? Now we look back and if we're honest, we feel ashamed of some of our attitudes, but Belly isn't much different from most of us at that stage 💁🏻‍♀️.

    Speaking of the brothers, we have to admit that although we prefer Jeremiah, the justification for Belly's attitudes also applies to Conrad. Yes, he's slightly older, but he's dealing with his mother's illness and the notion that his father has practically abandoned her, and he takes a more closed and defensive stance. Personally, we think that Jeremiah, who has been devalued by his father all his life and knows that Belly prefers Conrad to him, is a person with a one-in-a-million attitude. He's suffering too, but chooses to have a happier attitude so that he can help his mum have a perfect last summer. So, to conclude this part of the analysis, we're Team Jeremiah 😎 hahaha.     In our opinion, the writing, dialogue and themes of the book make it ideal for a younger audience, but it can be a fun book for any age and the best thing is to take it with you to the beach and read it lying on the sand with the sound of the sea in the background. Our rating is ⭐⭐⭐.5/5 stars.

    Olá a todos!🤗 O verão chegou ao fim, mas ainda temos um gostinho das férias para partilhar convosco☀️. A review do primeiro livro da trilogia O verão, O verão em que me apaixonei da Jenny Han. Não se esqueçam de que há spoilers neste post, por isso se estiverem a pensar ler a trilogia, por muito que adoremos ter-vos por cá, fechem este post e voltem depois.

Resumo

    Como já dissemos, este é o primeiro livro de uma trilogia e é uma leitura ideal para o verão e para sentirmos todas as emoções da simplicidade de um romance adolescente. Nesta história, a nossa protagonista é Isabel Conklin, carinhosamente apelidada de Belly, uma rapariga que diz que toda a sua vida pode ser medida em verões. E temos a confirmação disso enquanto ela nos narra como está a correr o seu verão atual e acontecimentos que a marcaram nos verões passados. O que torna o verão realmente importante para a Belly, são as férias na casa da praia dos Fisher, principalmente os irmãos Conrad e Jeremiah. A mãe da Belly e a mãe dos irmãos Fisher, são amigas muito próximas e as crianças de ambas cresceram juntas. Conrad e Jeremiah são normalmente mais próximos do irmão da Belly, Steven, mas este ano ela espera que seja diferente.

    A Belly sempre teve a maior das paixões pelo Conrad, mas ele nunca pareceu corresponder aos seus sentimentos. Agora, ela está prestes a fazer 16 anos e espera que este seja o momento perfeito para que ela e o Conrad tenham uma hipótese juntos. Com um verão recheado de zangas entre os dois e com o Conrad a ignorar a Belly ou a repreendê-la, o Jeremiah apresenta-se como o seu ombro amigo e os dois ficam ainda mais próximos.

    Enquanto que o Conrad assume uma postura muito mais defensiva e negativa, o Jeremiah age como o seu completo oposto, sendo amigável e extremamente prestável com todos. Ao longo do tempo, vamos percebendo que algo não está bem com a Susannah, a mãe dos rapazes, até que finalmente, a Belly descobre a verdade. A Susannah está novamente doente e desta vez o cancro é mais agressivo e as hipóteses de ela melhorar são muito poucas. Os rapazes Fisher sabem isto e a mãe da Belly também. Ela foi a única que não sabia. Com isto, finalmente percebemos o comportamento dos rapazes e apercebemo-nos em como todos eles lidam de formas diferentes com o que se avizinha.

A nossa opinião

    Vamos então às nossas opiniões?😌 Na nossa perspetiva o livro é divertido e fácil de ler. A história é interessante e simples, mas funciona porque a alternação entre perspetivas mantém-nos interessados em perceber o historial que leva a certas situações e atitudes por parte das nossas personagens. Ouvimos muitas opiniões sobre a Belly passar muito tempo a lamentar-se por coisinhas de nada e ser chatinha, mas convenhamos, ela tem 16 anos 😅. Quando é que não fomos chatinhos por causa de tretas na adolescência? Agora olhamos para trás e se formos honestos, sentimos vergonha por algumas das nossas atitudes, mas a Belly não é muito diferente da maioria de nós nessa fase 💁🏻‍♀️.

    Falando agora um pouco dos irmãos, temos de admitir que apesar de preferirmos o Jeremiah, a justificação para as atitudes da Belly, também se aplica ao Conrad. Sim, ele é ligeiramente mais velho, mas está a lidar com a doença da mãe e a noção de que o pai praticamente a abandonou e assume uma postura mais fechada e defensiva. Pessoalmente, achamos que o Jeremiah, que foi desvalorizado pelo pai a vida toda e sabe que a Belly prefere o Conrad a ele, é uma pessoa com uma atitude de um em um milhão. Ele está a sofrer também, mas escolhe ter uma atitude mais alegre para poder ajudar a mãe a ter um último verão perfeito. Por isso, e para concluir esta parte da análise, somos Team Jeremiah 😎 hahaha. E vocês? Corram para os comentários e digam-nos se são Team Conrad ou Team Jeremiah.

    Na nossa opinião, o tipo de escrita, diálogo e temas do livro tornam-no ideal para um público mais jovem, mas pode ser um livro divertido para qualquer idade e o melhor mesmo é levar este livro convosco para a praia e ler estendidos no areia com o som do mar no plano de fundo. A nossa classificação é de ⭐⭐⭐.5/5.
