🎵 Book Review: Daisy Jones & The Six 🎵

    Hello, everyone!🤗 How have you been? We're back with another review! We've had a few bookish opinions piling up recently and it's about time we started revealing them to our dear readers! This time, the book is Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This one has been on our TBR for a while and unlike what we've seen where most people start by reading this one and then, move on to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, we did the opposite so we were already looking forward to it based on the exploration of Evelyn's story. Did the book live up to it?

    If you haven't read the book yet, you can go ahead and read the summary because there won't be any spoilers. However, stop before you get to the topic Our opinion because then you'll have the whole story explained!

Summary

    In this novel we follow the rise and fall of a fictional band from the 70s. The book is immediately captivating as it is written in an interview transcript format that makes you feel like you're in the room with each of the band members.

    Although the whole band contributes to the story, it is centred on Daisy Jones, a talented and ambitious young woman, and the leader of The Six, the charismatic and resilient Billy Dunne. Their stories begin at very different points, but end up intersecting when they are offered a collaboration. The book has an incredibly powerful narrative that explores themes such as love, creativity, addictions and the complexities of human relationships. The music, fame and personal challenges of the characters create a scenario so vivid in our minds that we feel it's impossible for this band to be fictitious.

    Through the accounts of each member, we discover not only the band's trajectory, but also the ups and downs of each one's life, culminating in the group's abrupt break-up in 1979 after years of striving for stardom. Nobody knows why the band split up when they were at the top of their game and defining the music of their generation, but all will be revealed very soon...

Our opinion

    From now on, folks, we're going to have spoilers, so if you haven't read the book and still want to, this is your chance to get out and come back later!

    This book will stay in our minds for a long time! It was a very slow read because we didn't know exactly what we were getting into, but we were quickly sucked into this world. The difference between this book and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is that here we already know what the outcome will be. Not that this detracts from the story! Quite the contrary! As we get attached to the characters, we can't help, but be intrigued by how seven people who seem to have the world at their feet because of the music they release, end everything from one moment to the next.

    Since we're already used to Taylor J. Reid's concept, we went into it with an open mind to the fact that we were dealing with characters who have obvious flaws that make them more human in our eyes.

    The book deals a lot with the intense use of drugs and alcohol that existed in the 1970s, with a particular impact on the music industry, and we have to admit that we initially resented Billy and Daisy in particular for the little resistance they seemed to offer to the use of these substances. In Billy's case, it hurt us a lot more because we knew he was letting down Camilla (who quickly became one of the most interesting characters) and his daughters.

    The romantic ‘affair’ between Daisy and Billy is complex, because there is no easy betrayal to interpret here. There is clearly a strong emotional connection, but it was admirable to see Billy resist it for the sake of his history with Camilla and his daughters. We always thought that Camilla was what kept Billy safe and we were glad that they stayed together even though we felt sorry for Daisy.  If she was the catalyst for the end of Billy's marriage, he would never forgive himself as well as she wouldn't and they would end up being the end of each other, entering a self-destructive cycle.

    Another very interesting theme for us was Karen's history with Graham. Their relationship is a reflection of the complexity of the bonds within the band. Right from the start, we see how they deal with the challenges that arise not only from fame, but also from the group dynamic. Their relationship is full of insecurities and doubts that lead them to wonder whether there will be a future or not, which brings a realistic touch to the narrative. Right from the start, Karen asserts herself as a woman and an artist in a predominantly male environment. Karen is a force in her own right, and this further enriches the story where we have complex female characters such as Daisy and Camilla.

   

    A particularly impactful moment was Karen's pregnancy and the process of her decision to opt for an abortion. This situation brought up deep questions about motherhood, personal choices and the pressure of the world around them, as well as the feelings of everyone involved. The author has tackled this difficult and defining moment in Karen and Graham's lives and added a layer of complexity to the development of both characters.

   This book is not just a story about music and intense romance, but an extraordinary analysis of the nuances of life, relationships and choices that mould who we are and who we will one day be. The writing is engaging, and the narrative takes us to a vibrant and turbulent time. It certainly deserves our maximum rating of 5 stars ⭐! We recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story, full of emotion and reflection.

Desta vez, o livro é o Daisy Jones & The Six da Taylor Jenkins Reid. Este já estava na nossa TBR há algum tempo e ao contrário do que temos visto, em que a maior parte das pessoas começa por ler este e passa para Os Sete Maridos de Evelyn Hugo, nós fizemos o oposto, pelo que já íamos com uma expectativa traçada com base na exploração da história da Evelyn. Será que o livro correspondeu?

    Se ainda não leram o livro, podem seguir e ler o resumo, porque não teremos spoilers. No entanto, parem antes de chegar ao tópico A nossa opinião, porque aí terão a história toda explicada!

Resumo

    Neste romance seguimos a ascensão e queda de uma banda fictícia dos anos 70. O livro é imediatamente cativante ao ser escrito no formato de transcrição de entrevista, que nos faz sentir que estamos na sala com cada um dos membros da banda.

    Ainda que toda a banda dê o seu contributo para a história, esta está centrada na Daisy Jones, uma jovem talentosa e ambiciosa, e no líder da banda The Six, o carismático e resiliente Billy Dunne. A histórias de ambos começam em pontos muito diferentes, mas acabam por se cruzar quando uma colaboração entre ambos lhes é proposta. O livro tem um narrativa incrivelmente poderosa em que explora temas como amor, criatividade, vícios e as complexidades das relações humanas. A música, a fama e os desafios pessoais dos personagens criam um cenário tão vivido na nossa mente que sentimos que é impossível esta banda ser fictícia.

    Através dos relatos de cada membro, descobrimos não apenas a trajetória da banda, mas também os altos e baixos da vida de cada um, que culminam com a abrupta separação do grupo em 1979, após anos de luta pelo estrelato. Ninguém sabe porque é que a banda se separou quando estava no topo da carreira e a definir a música da sua geração, mas tudo será revelado muito em breve...

A nossa opinião

    A partir de agora pessoal, vamos ter spoilers por isso, se não leram o livro e ainda pretendem ler, esta é a vossa oportunidade para sair e voltar mais tarde!

    Este livro vai ficar na nossa mente por muito tempo! Foi uma leitura que começou bastante devagar porque não sabíamos exatamente no que nos estávamos a meter mas fomos rapidamente sugados para este mundo. A diferença entre este livro e Os Sete Maridos de Evelyn Hugo, é que aqui já sabemos qual será o desfecho. Não que isso diminua o interesse pela história! Muito pelo contrário! Há medida que nos afeiçoamos aos personagens, não conseguimos deixar de ficar intrigados em como é que sete pessoas que parecem ter o mundo aos seus pés devido à música que lançam, terminam tudo de um momento para o outro.

    Já habituados ao conceito da Taylor J. Reid, fomos com uma mente aberta para o facto de estarmos a lidar com personagens que possuem evidentes falhas de caráter que os tornam mais humanos aos nossos olhos.

    O livro aborda muito o uso intenso de drogas e álcool que existiu nos anos 70 com particular impacto no mundo da música e temos de admitir que inicialmente ficamos algo ressentidos principalmente com o Billy e a Daisy pela pouco resistência que pareciam oferecer ao uso destas substâncias. Inclusive, no caso do Billy, custava-nos muito mais por sabermos que ele estaria a desapontar a Camilla (que rapidamente se tornou uma das personagens mais interessantes) e as filhas.

    O "caso" romântico que existe entre a Daisy e o Billy é complexo porque não existe uma traição fácil de interpretar aqui. Existe claramente um ligação emocional forte mas foi admirável ver o Billy a resistir a isso por amor à sua história com a Camilla e as filhas. Sempre consideramos que a Camilla era o que mantinha o Billy a salvo e ficamos satisfeitos por eles terem ficado juntos ainda que fiquemos com pena da Daisy. Se ela tivesse sido o catalisador para o fim do casamento do Billy, ele nunca se iria perdoar, tal como ela e, acabariam por ser o fim um do outro, entrando num ciclo autodestrutivo.

    Outro tema bastante interessante para nós, foi o da história da Karen com o Graham. A relação deles é um reflexo da complexidade dos laços dentro da banda. Desde o início, vemos como eles lidam com os desafios que surgem não apenas pela fama, mas também pela dinâmica de grupo. A relação entre os dois é repleta de inseguranças e dúvidas que os levam a pensar se haverá futuro ou não, o que traz um toque realista à narrativa. Desde o inicio que a Karen se afirma como mulher e artista num ambiente predominantemente masculino. A Karen é uma força por si só, e isso enriquece ainda mais a história onde temos personagens femininas bem complexas como a Daisy e a Camilla.

    Um momento particularmente impactante foi a gravidez de Karen e o processo de decisão dela de optar pelo aborto. Essa situação trouxe à tona questões profundas sobre a maternidade, escolhas pessoais e a pressão do mundo ao seu redor bem como os sentimentos de todos os envolvidos. A autora abordou este momento difícil e marcante da vida da Karen e do Graham e adicionou uma camada de complexidade ao desenvolvimento de ambas as personagens.

   Este livro não é apenas uma história sobre música e um romance intenso, mas sim uma extraordinária análise às nuances da vida, das relações e das escolhas que moldam quem somos e quem um dia vamos ser. A escrita é envolvente, e a narrativa leva-nos para uma época vibrante e turbulenta. Com certeza, merece a nossa avaliação máxima de 5 estrelinhas ⭐! Recomendamos a leitura para todos que apreciam uma boa história, repleta de emoção e reflexões.
