🎧 Book Review: Eleanor & Park 🎧

    Hello again!🤗 Another review in such a short space of time, we must be going mad! No, don't worry! We're just giving our opinions on the books we read this summer and this is definitely the last one we finished during the sunny months! Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell has been on our TBR for a total of four years, but we finally had the courage to pick it up during August and we can finally give you our opinion. We know that this book has many mixed reviews and that there are those who love it and those who can't stand it. We weren't sure what we were going to find, but we decided to take a chance!

Summary

    The story takes place in the 1980s and follows two teenagers, Eleanor and Park. Park is the quiet, inconspicuous kid at school and Eleanor has just arrived and seems to be so noticeable that she's constantly tormented by everyone. Park thinks of Eleanor as the strange, red-haired girl that everyone makes fun of and Eleanor thinks Park is just an antisocial Korean kid. Everything changes when they start sharing a seat on the school bus and Park notices that Eleanor looks at the comics he reads to follow the story.

    Then they both begin to realise that Eleanor is just a girl with a lot of serious family problems as well as an appearance that makes her feel out of place, and that Park is just someone who is introspective and prefers the quiet of his comics.

    Little by little, the two begin to develop a bond and face insecurities and the prejudice of others towards their relationship. In a story full of passion and music, we feel transported to our teenage years and the emotions of first love.

Our opinion

    Reading this book was a rollercoaster of emotions! We have to admit that after a while, we felt we weren't going to like it, because of some of the more negative opinions. In the first few chapters, we still had doubts as to whether this wasn't going to be a book you had to force yourself to read little by little. We can't explain it, but there was a moment when we didn't stop at the end of the chapter and just wanted to carry on and BAM... we were completely involved in the story 🤭.

    We felt very connected to Eleanor and Park, and there were even moments when we felt like we were listening to a description of the feelings we experience at certain times in our lives. And no, we're not teenagers any more, but I think that's what made it special for us. The book reminded us of the feeling of being a teenager experiencing first love while reconciling this intense new feeling with school and the conflicting situations experienced at home.

    We especially liked the contrast between the two characters' homes and how this seems to have moulded some of the less appreciated aspects of their personalities, even if this has happened as an involuntary survival mechanism.

    The end of the book is quite sad, but it leaves us with some hope that one day, maybe later, Eleanor and Park will be together again and that the separation imposed at the end won't be something permanent.

    One thing we would have liked to have seen more of was Park's family life, because what we have is basic and it would have been very interesting, given that his parents have a marriage that has probably faced many challenges. To see a little more about it, including the culture shock for Park's mum and the confusion that her children might feel in reconciling their Korean roots with their day-to-day lives in an environment where racism and social exclusion were widespread and accepted, could make the story more appealing.

    We realise that this isn't a book that everyone will enjoy, but personally, we enjoyed the experience of reading it and it was just what we needed for this summer. Is it clichéd at times? Yes. Is it a read that will no longer live up to the standards of 2024 in many respects? Yes, ma'am, but we have to realise that unlike us, the book can't update itself to today's standards. If we can read it while aknowledging that it will have its flaws, that's fine. If not, that's no problem and we move on to other reading that's more important to us.

    Olá novamente!🤗 Mais um review em tão pouco tempo, devemos estar a enlouquecer! Não, não se preocupem! Estamos só a deixar as opiniões sobre os livros que lemos este verão e este é decididamente o último que terminados durantes os meses soalheiros! Eleanor & Park da Rainbow Rowell, esteve um total de 4 anos na nossa TBR, mas finalmente tivemos coragem para pegar nele durante o mês de agosto e finalmente podemos dar a nossa opinião. Sabemos que este livro tem muitas mixed reviews e que existe quem o adore e quem não o suporte. Não sabíamos bem o que íamos encontrar, mas decidimos arriscar!

Resumo

    A história decorre nos anos 80 e acompanha dois adolescentes, Eleanor e Park. Park é o miúdo calado e discreto da escola e Eleanor acaba de chegar e parece dar nas vistas de forma a ser constantemente incomodada por todos. Park pensa em Eleanor como sendo a miúda ruiva e estranha que todos gozam e Eleanor pensa que Park é apenas um miúdo coreano anti-social. Tudo muda quando começam a partilhar o lugar no autocarro da escola e Park nota que Eleanor espreita as BDs que ele lê para acompanhar a história.

    Aí ambos começam a tomar consciência que Eleanor é apenas uma rapariga com muitos problemas familiares sérios, bem como uma aparência que a faz sentir-se deslocada e que Park é apenas alguém introspetivo e que prefere o sossego das suas bandas desenhadas.

    Pouco a pouco, os dois começam a desenvolver uma ligação e enfrentam inseguranças e o preconceito dos outros para com a sua relação. Numa história cheia de paixão e música, sentimos que somos transportados para a nossa adolescência e para as emoções do primeiro amor.

A nossa opinião

    Ora, ler este livro foi uma montanha russa de emoções! Temos que admitir que ao fim de algum tempo, sentíamos que não íamos gostar por causa de algumas opiniões mais para o lado negativo. Nos primeiros capítulos, ainda estávamos com dúvidas se esta não seria uma leitura em que temos que nos forçar a ir lendo aos poucos. Nem conseguimos explicar, mas existiu um momento em que não paramos no fim do capítulo e só queríamos continuar e BAM... estávamos completamente envolvidos pela história 🤭.

    Sentimo-nos muito conectados à Eleanor e ao Park, tendo inclusive momentos em que sentimos que estávamos a ouvir a descrição dos sentimentos que experienciamos em determinados momentos da nossa vida. E não, já não somos adolescentes, mas acho que é isso que tornou a leitura especial para nós. O livro fez-nos recordar a sensação de ser um adolescente a experienciar o primeiro amor enquanto conciliamos esta nova sensação intensa com a escola e com as situações de conflito que são experienciadas em casa.

    Gostamos especialmente do contraste entre os lares dos dois personagens e na forma em como isso parece ter moldado alguns aspetos menos apreciados da personalidade de cada um deles, ainda que isto tenha acontecido como um mecanismo de sobrevivência e de forma involuntária.

    O final do livro é bastante triste, mas deixa-nos com alguma esperança de que um dia, quem sabe, mais tarde a Eleanor e o Park estarão novamente juntos e que a separação imposta no fim não seja algo permanente.

    Uma coisa que gostávamos de ter visto mais desenvolvida, era a vida familiar do Park, porque o que temos é algo básico e era muito interessante, visto que os pais dele têm um casamento que provavelmente enfrentou muitos desafios. Ver um pouco mais sobre isso, de forma a incluir o choque cultural para a mãe do Park e a confusão que os filhos podem sentir em conciliar as suas raízes coreanas com o seu dia a dia num ambiente em que o racismo e a exclusão social eram vincados e aceites, poderia tonar a história mais cativante.

    Percebemos que este não seja um livro que qualquer um vai gostar, mas pessoalmente gostamos da experiência de o ler e era exatamente o que precisávamos para este verão. É cliché em certos momentos? Sim. É uma leitura que já não vai corresponder aos padrões de 2024 em muitos aspetos? É sim senhora, mas temos de perceber que ao contrário de nós, o livro não pode atualizar-se aos padrões de hoje em dia. Se conseguirmos ler cientes de que terá as suas falhas, pronto. Se não, não tem problema nenhum e passamos a outras leitura mais importante para nós.
