Book Review: The Mistake by Elle Kennedy
Hello everyone! Happy Wednesday! To add a little something extra to your week, today we're bringing you our much-anticipated review of The Mistake by Elle Kennedy!
Truth be told, after reading The Deal, we already knew we had a soft spot for Logan. So, this book has been high on our TBR list.
And yes, we have to admit that watching the Off-Campus adaptation probably didn't help with our feelings. Antonio Cipriano's charisma definitely made us even more inclined to like him, and seeing how lovely the cast seems in interviews and behind-the-scenes content certainly hasn't helped to reduce our enthusiasm either.
But putting all of that aside, what did we actually think of Logan's book?
Well… somewhere between a very cute romance and a boy who seriously tested our patience. Shall we begin the analysis?
⚠️ Warning: spoilers ahead! If you haven't read The Mistake and want to be completely surprised, skip this review and come back later! ⚠️
If you are interested in checking our review of The Deal, click here!
We had actually already read the first few chapters of The Mistake, since they were included as a sneak peek at the end of The Deal. So, we already knew that Grace would become Logan's love interest.
What we weren't entirely sure about was how their relationship would work. Garrett and Hannah's story had a much deeper emotional storyline, so we were curious to see how Grace and Logan's story would compare.
And the answer is, essentially, misunderstandings. A lot of misunderstandings, and Logan being a bit too much… well, Logan. So many of the problems between Logan and Grace could probably have been solved with one honest conversation from the beginning.
Garrett has a master's degree in relationship communication compared to our boy! ๐
A huge part of Logan's initial behaviour comes from his obsession with Hannah and Garrett's relationship. At first, it almost feels like Hannah is the centre of Logan's universe, but eventually, we realise that isn't really what he wants. He's simply yearning for a relationship like the one Hannah has with his best friend.
Did you see us using the word yearning? We're evolving, heheh!
And once Logan understands that, he finally starts seeing Grace as more than a distraction. But by then, he's already screwed things up pretty badly…
Grace starts the story as a pretty quiet and perhaps even slightly insecure character, which made some of her early decisions particularly surprising to us.
But she ended up surprising us in the best possible way and proving just how strong and confident she could actually be. Honestly? Good for her! ๐
One of the things we really appreciated was that she didn't simply forgive Logan and fall straight back into his arms. He had to work for it!
Applause, please!
Boy, did he have to work for it! After all those early hot moments, we were honestly expecting Grace to give in much more easily. Instead, she made Logan prove that he actually wanted something serious and that she wasn't simply going to be another girl on his list.
And we loved that for her!
She gave him a hard time, made him put in the effort and, most importantly, made him understand that if he wanted her back, he needed to show that he was actually in it for the long run.
Respect to our girl!
Now, Logan. We definitely love him. But boy, did he annoy us in this book!
He doesn't exactly behave perfectly towards Grace, and there are moments when his decisions are genuinely frustrating, even though his heart is in the right place.
The biggest problem for us was how long it took him to properly make amends. We understood where some of his behaviour was coming from, but understanding it didn't necessarily make it any less annoying.
And because we already liked Logan so much, those moments probably stood out even more.
There is also something quite funny about the fact that Logan spends so much time convinced that Hannah is what he wants, only to realise that what he actually wants is the kind of relationship Garrett and Hannah have.
Once he figures that out, things start making much more sense. But by then, Grace has already had enough.
Can we blame her?
Ramona gets no sympathy from us ๐ค (with one exception!)
If Grace surprised us positively, her group of friends did the opposite. They were absolutely horrible! While Hannah has Allie as her go-to girl and a loyal friend, Grace starts the story in what seems to be a viper's nest!
Ramona, in particular, really tested our patience. We understand that Grace forgives her, but we struggled to understand why. To us, Ramona's behaviour felt like it came from a combination of jealousy and self-pity. Even after everything that happened, it often felt like she was trying to position herself as the victim so that Grace would comfort her.
The one exception is that Grace and Logan did the right thing by rescuing her from the idiots who held her against her will. She might have been a shitty friend, but no girl deserves what could have happened to her in that place.
Another thing we really appreciated was seeing Grace slowly realise that she was giving Ramona endless chances because of their friendship, while struggling to understand why Logan kept giving his father chance after chance.
She struggled to understand Logan's decision to stick around and care for someone who constantly sabotaged his career and life, while doing pretty much the same thing herself by continuing to support a friend who immediately texted a guy she had a crush on after he broke her heart…
Not cool, Ramona! Girl code always comes first! ๐
Logan's family storyline
The storyline involving Logan's family was probably one of the parts of the book that surprised us the most. We knew there had been changes between the book and the series, but we hadn't realised just how much until reading The Mistake.
In the book, Logan's father is struggling with substance abuse, and the situation is much more central to Logan's story.
Logan and Jeff have taken on the responsibility of looking after him, and they are essentially putting their own lives on hold because they don't want to abandon their dad.
There is no easy answer here.
None of us has personally dealt with substance abuse in our families, but we've both known people dealing with health situations where helping someone can be incredibly complicated, especially when that person isn't ready to accept help.
You can support someone. You can offer help. But you can't force someone to accept it before they're ready.
And that's something we think the book handled surprisingly well.
It also made Logan's eventual decision about his future much more meaningful and shows the type on man he is and what he is willing to sacrifice to make sure his brother gets a chance to live too.
He has this incredible opportunity to pursue hockey professionally, but taking it means making a choice that feels, at least initially, like abandoning his family and betraying the promise he made to Jeff.
And this is where we really appreciated the coach stepping in. He is the supreme and ultimate caregiver of this boys!
The ending might be a little too perfect with everyone getting some sort of happy ending, but we can't lie... we were relieved.
The coach speaks to Logan's father, explains just how much potential Logan has and makes him realise that his son's future is slipping away because of having commited to take care of an injured father.
Eventually, Logan's father chooses to enter rehab and deal with his addition and that decision gives both Logan and Jeff the chance to actually have their own lives again: Jeff can step away from the garage and experience the world, while Logan can finally pursue his dream of playing professionally.
Is it a little fairy-tale-ish? Absolutely.
Did we enjoy seeing it happen?
Since we had already watched the first season from Off Campus before reading The Mistake, some of the changes were particularly noticeable.
The family storyline is one of the biggest ones. In the show, the situation involves Logan's mother rather than his father.
There is also no sister for Logan in the book, so the inclusion of Jules in the adaptation felt a little strange to us. We actually think the dynamic between Logan and Jeff works better on its own, particularly because their relationship is so important to the family storyline.
Knowing the book version made us realise just how much the adaptation changed Logan's background.
And while we understand why adaptations have to make changes, some of these choices made more sense to us in the book.
Overall
We really liked The Mistake. The romance is cute, Logan and Grace have plenty of chemistry, and Grace's development to a confident and more sure woman ended up being one of our favourite parts of the story.
But we didn't love it quite as much as The Deal. Garrett and Hannah's story simply had something that hit us a little harder emotionally, and we found their relationship and the overall storyline more compelling.
Logan also frustrated us enough that we couldn't quite give the book a full four stars.
So we're calling it a 3.75 / 5 ⭐. Not quite a four but definitely more than a three and a half.
Basically… a very solid “we liked it, but please stop making terrible decisions, Logan.”
And despite all our complaints, he's still one of our favourites. Which probably says more about us than it does about him.
So this was all for today! We hope you enjoyed reading our review! Let is know what you think about Logan and Grace's relationship and tell us in the comments, which ship from the books is your favourite!

Olรก a todos! Feliz quarta-feira!
Vamos comeรงar a anรกlise?

Jรก sabรญamos que a Grace vinha aรญ ๐
E a resposta รฉ, essencialmente, mal-entendidos.
Repararam que usรกmos a palavra ansiar (yearn)? Estamos a evoluir, heheh!
Honestamente? Muito bem, miรบda! ๐
Logan… o nosso rapaz desiludiu-nos ๐
Agora, o Logan.
Mas, nessa altura, a Grace jรก estรก farta.
A Ramona, em particular, testou seriamente a nossa paciรชncia.
A histรณria da famรญlia do Logan ๐
Sabรญamos que existiam diferenรงas entre o livro e a sรฉrie, mas nรฃo tรญnhamos percebido a dimensรฃo dessas alteraรงรตes atรฉ lermos O Erro.
Absolutamente.
Gostรกmos de ver tudo isto acontecer? Tambรฉm sem dรบvida! ๐
Ler o livro fez-nos perceber atรฉ que ponto a adaptaรงรฃo alterou o passado e o contexto familiar do Logan.
No geral ๐
